Largest spike in EI recipients in Alberta

EI, EI, ow!

Alberta led the country in a key rate of growth, says a just-released survey by Statistics Canada.

But it’s not the kind of growth we want to see.

Alberta has seen the fastest growth in the nation of people receiving unemployment insurance (EI) benefits.

We’re up 16.8% from April to May of this year, says StatsCan.

The news gets even grimmer here in E-town.

In a one-year period, Edmonton has seen the number of people on EI nearly quadruple, from 4,250 in May 2008 to 16,040 this past May.

But it could be worse.

Our Cowtown cousins beat us out in the bad-news department.

Over that same timeframe, the number of people on pogy in Calgary leaped from 4,130 to 18,150.

That means Calgary and Edmonton rank No. 1 and No. 2 in the nation in the percentage of increase in EI claims compared to any other major city.

The StatsCan survey showed 778,700 people were on EI in Canada, up nearly 310,000 from just a year ago. That’s the highest number of people on the dole since 1997, say officials.

yeah..well I did say that Alberta was sort of feeling the pinch. From where I live here in BC and North, the EI rate is 13.5%...well it could be higher if we take in the number that quit looking for jobs...and this is BC...sigh.

Bellysgonnagetya: Im mulling over moving to canada for a year maybe 2 if im lucky for work,
What is the work situation like in canada at the moment?
Ireland is crippled with unemployment now so theres really no point in moving to canada if it has the same problems

Hi Belly ,
haha I caught you in another forum tongue

No seriously , Canada is the most amazing country ,been 3 times and have done 8 provinces . The best most thriling times of my life .

There are certain things you will have to sort b4 you will be allowed in there to work . But you know this ,right ?

Like everywhere else Canada has its underbelly and its problems .
Having said that ,there is minor crime there compared to Ireland ,would you believe ?? These problems are the world over though and not major in cartain parts of the place.

Canadians can give you better advice as I have none to give ,except to say ,Go go go !! Experience what this amazing country has to offer .

Thanks Geo!!

I work for 6 temp agencies. Even they have been suffering. Am getting some interviews, but when you are competing with much younger kids/young adults, it's not easy.

I was told that if the place I volunteer at had known me 3 weeks before I started, I would have been given a paying job. It would be a dream job for me. Helping people with disabilities in a creative outlet, and doing/teaching art at the same time. sigh. LOL (I'm keeping fingers and toes crossed, that a paying position will be available in the future.) In the mean time, in between interviews, do lots of temp jobs.

Being unemployed has made it easier for me to help my mother. Trying to hold down a full time job, then going to my parent's after wards, was draining. My dog is happy to have me home more often. grin

Yep, I agree geo...having just escaped the clutches of Saskatchewan! Things are never as good or will they be as good as perceived to be. Historically is Sask. there have been high hopes and great starts, but for some reason or another...deflation happens quickly and many are left hanging. The economy, which I believe is false, has rapidly risen, far too much for the average Joneses...I know many who were greatly effected by PCS layoffs...I also know many farmers who aren't able to continue to maintain what they have, and many people unable to continue to maintain their lifestyles because the cost of everything has increased. For those who work for the establishment, that being the government, which crown corps are...hats off to you that you have that protection. My point is, every province/territory and country goes hot and cold...it is what it is, when it is. You make the best of it, try to save what you can and enjoy what life offers you and what you can attain.
JMO, but look at my stepson, who bought a home and built a life based on the great job he had with mining in the northeast...that was shut down and he is now back in AB, on the rigs, with my soninlaw. The other soninlaw, if he ever can get his dad's crop off, is planning on heading back out to the rigs as well! - along with most of their peers...cuz they can't get into the bigass jobs with the unions...they can't afford the super high cost of school...so they go west! wave
