Why is my favourite hanging place, Chapters not support french books or magasines, I believe they do have Spanish ones in the U.S?
I don't want to be "American/U.S" Give me back my country We used to have so many little books stores in Toronto (French ones too) all exploited by the bigger book stores, and in the end we are losing our heritage.

Well first you can thank chapters for buying up alot of those small independant book stores..and secondly there is not a large market for french language books in Toronto. Who's losing there heritage? French is not my heritage is it yours?

You are all missing the point, it's not just Chapters it's everything in Canada, it's been blinding us over the decades and getting to the point there will be no Canada.
Look at the G20 it's like a bad dream in American Movies, it was totally U.S driven such as Police even in the crowds. I was there I saw them, so obvious they were looking like creatures out of a bad movie starting trouble not peace!
Must be be because it's Monday morning...or...I am once again stuck in dumb, but I am just not getting this one. It's me, I know Therefor, not giving it any more thought, because I have limited amount of thought left and do not get a day off until after working 10 straight....and I do not have alot of valuable reasoning power left over to expend upon....you know...stuff

"Oh Canada, please stand on guard for thee!!!"
I lived in Quebec. The area we lived in, it was impossible to get English books. Even in the AMERICAN owned Walmart. Library had English books that were as old as the hills.
JMO, if stores are going to be required to have Books in English and French ... it should also be the same in Quebec. What about other people who are Canadian and speak another language? Why not have books in their language as well?
Stores do not provide books in French, (outside of Quebec) because of the cost. A store does not buy one book at a time, it has to order so many books. If the books don't sell, it affects profits and cost of ordering etc those books. It's not a political thing, it's business. Chapters/Indigo will order books in other languages (where I live), and Audrey's book store will do the same. Even books that are not popular or the type you'd normally see in a book store.

But then again what do I know about the English language. I'm just a "swampsinger'. In so far as being lucky to live here remember that Canada is originally made up of Upper and Lower Canada. One English and the other French. My ancestors came here with a land grant while this was still a French colony. You will find more services available to English speaking people in Quebec than to French speakers in Toronto. Anglophones come to Quebec and demand to served in their language .... uh Bienvenue au Quebec! I lived in Toronto and tried it as an experiment to get service in French, you can guess what happened.
Before you start ...... sorry, I am not a Separatist. Nor am I a ...French first in Quebec sort of person. I have an honest belief that this country was founded on the basis of two official languages.
btw .... I am NOT a "swampsinger". I am Canadian of who's mother tongue is French. I also take pride in being fluent in the other official language of Canada. How are you doing on that?

exactly, my cleaner does not speak much English. she speaks Spanish and has lived in Canada for 24 years. even her kids who were born in Canada speak Spanish because that's the language she taught them and speaks to them in.
The French/English thing was the petulant hubris of murderous European sea-pirates who usurped this land from indigenous peoples whose languages are all but exinct, mainly due to overbearing religious exploitation and bigotry.

I can understand your frustration for not being able to find the English books you would have liked and even though I’m convinced what you’re saying is true I think you’re not being fair but rather bias in your comments and this for the below reasons. The OP mentions not being able to find French books in Libraries and based on information in their profile which mentions Toronto, Canada I take it this person is talking about finding French books in Libraries in Toronto or the Toronto area. If that were the case one should realize and take into consideration that Toronto is the biggest city in Canada with a population of approximately 2.5 million while the area you’re talking about is probably Rouyn Noranda which today has a population of approximately 41,000 and this since the fusion of different municipalities in 2002, before that year the population was less than 30,000. As you also know Rouyn Noranda is a mining town located in northwestern Quebec, an area one could consider remote but that’s not the point I want to emphasize. What I want to emphasize is if someone were to go to bigger centers in Quebec, for example Montreal which has a population of approximately 1.6 million, 65% that of Toronto I can assure you they’d find all the English books they were looking for and they’d also have a vast selection of English magazines and newspapers to enjoy. One must look at facts, take for example Montreal’s McGill University, it’s an English University located in downtown Montreal whose main language of instruction is English; it’s not only one of the best Universities in Canada but also in the world. International students make up 19% of its student population and this is the largest percentage of any Canadian University.
