I just recently started working out at a gym and am wondering if there are others that would share what their fitness routine consists of.

I've been using the bike, treadmill and doing some weights .... but last night I just discovered the elliptal machine wherein the workout (burning calories) is about twice as fast as using the bike.

So have you found an effective method to tone your body without spending hours and hours at the gym?? I've been going for 5 days a week and its approx 2-3 hours per visit and I'm not sure if I'd want to continue this routine forever and ever. Or am I being unrealistic to think that I can shorten this routine?

Wow Langley,

That is incredible. I think it is great you have such a vigorous routine, but I think that would be hard to keep up in the long run. My suggestion is to consider the elliptical machine as your soul source of cardio. It is a total body workout. If you work at higher intensities, it is great for toning and of course lower intensities (at higher speeds) is great for cardio. 45 minutes should be enough for each visit. Combine that with 45 minuts weights..you will be out of there at 1 hour and a half. Weights should be alternated so that you are working different parts of your body each day. Working muscles too hard can be detrimental.

As for me, I go about four times a week. I run twice for 45 minutes and do the elliptical twice for 45 minutes. I alternate between my lower and upper body in terms of weights.

Diet is just as, if not more than an exercise regime.

And as far as i know, swimming is one of the best ways to tone up as it works just about every muscle in the body simultaeneously.

Thanks for the information Liberty .... this is the type of things I want to know ... what works and what is effective to get the best bang for my buck - so to speak. I actually met a lady today who said that her girlfriend only uses the Elliptical machine and went from approx a size 14 to a size 2 in about a year or so of training -of course she was extremely dedicated to her goal as well.

I need to start alternating my weights as well .. so thanks for that info. Running I find extremely difficult as my shins start to hurt so I think I want to have exercises where there is less impact on my joints etc. Gotta remember I'm twice your age!! (lol)

I agree Gibson that diet is extremely important as well ... and I'm generally a healthy eater .... so basically I'm just trying to limit my bread intake and stay away from the bakery goods and limit my chocolate comsumption. I'm not depriving myself of anything, but more concentrating on portion sizes. I think depriving oneself defeats the purpose of enjoying life and ends up making you crave it all the more.

That is the best way, Langley! Never deprive yourself because you will just end up binging. You look really fit (from what I can tell) already so I guess the key is to keep it up and work slowly towards any goals you have. A quick fix can lead to an even quicker rebound.

Right now I started to speed walk again. Now that my son is in school I try to go everyday and walk for about 45 minutes to an hour.

I also used to do tae-bo and am hoping to do that this winter again too.

Tracey have you ever tried the pole walking?? I've seen a few people in my area doing this and basically it looks like they use the same pole that are used for skiing. Its supposed to be better because you are using your arms as well. I think in a way it reminds me of the elliptal machine which uses arms and legs together. Its just a matter of getting co-ordinatored enough to use it and especially when it times to go in the opposite direction. Oh well - its a good thing I can laugh at myself.

I've seen people doing Tae-bo in the park across from where I used to work .... is it actually a way to get into shape or just more a relaxation technique??

Rocky .... rockclimbing - wow good for you. I had the opportunity to try this on an Outward Bound excursion in Pemberton, B.C. ... of course it was just a small rock face, but it was a blast and especially the rapelling. I'm not sure if I'd be up to face those huge mountain sides, but I guess its just a matter of inch by inch. I've seen rock climbers on the faces of huge rock sides and they look like little ants clinging to the side of the mountain. But wow I think they must be having a blast. There is an indoor climbing adventure business in Coquitlam that I will have to check out one day. I think that would be a good place for me to start out at ... since I don't know any professional climbers.

Not sure why you say that .... because I'm not advocating one fitness product or routine over another... but if you want to send your $19.95 for the first tape (lol) call within the next 15 minutes. Otherwise this offer will never be seen again.

I agree ... but its also a matter of finding activities that you enjoy doing ... so it doesn't seem like work, but instead is fun. As for running ..... never have enjoyed this just on its own, but playing soccer is alot of fun even though I'm athetically not very well co-ordinatored. I enjoy the gym and am having fun - so that's important to me so to me its worth it.
