I am a fit and healthy white guy in my mid forties who will be visiting Canada, from South Africa, in November and am hoping to meet people online now so as to establish friendships prior to me traveling to Canada.I enjoy the outdoors and sport and am a keen rugby fan (obviously being from SA). I have hardly ever seen snow (maybe 4 times in my life)and cannot wait to try skiing, snowboarding and skating.

I live in a very warm climate - can still swim and surf in the Indian Ocean in the middle of our winter and I love to ride my Harley along the coast of Durban.

I will be based in Halifax initially but would like to see as much of Canada as possible, so, if you think you could assist me by being my 'virtual' tour guide initially, who knows, maybe we could explore a bit of Canada together!!

If you would like any more info about me and South Africa, I am more than happy to oblige as well.

Thank you

Looks like you will be on the east coast. Try to get into Quebec for some great downhill sking. This is a rather large country, I hope you have time to see all of it's natural beauty.

If you ever get the chance to visit Ontario let me know, I will introduce you to some of our country folk.

Hope you have a great time here.

Thank you for your reply! I plan on coming over at the end of October (would I still catch some of your autumn fall?) and leaving at the end of January. I have never had a white xmas and would love the experience.

I will be staying with a friend in halifax as my base but do intend traveling as much as possible. Obviously pointers in the 'must see' direction will be greatly appreciated and local knowledge re travel tips, weather etc will be great.

Hope to hear from you soon.

Cheers

The biggest thing here is medicare. We try to convince our friends to the south that Medicare is good; you won't lose your house if you want to survive a heart attack. Amys, however, are jealous of their monies if the monies they pay in taxes are spent to cure and treat a person who is not them, but a stranger, like a guy in the next street over. They concentrate on their losses, not on their potential gains. Of course; why else would it be a country that allows its citizens to own guns? You come, I shoot, period, that's the attitude and mentality. If you travel south of the border, therefore, I suggest you buy a disposable single-use handgun with six rounds on the border duty-free shop when you enter the states. It's not worth investing in a fancy gun or a flamethrower or a bazooka rocket launcher, because firearms are not allowed to import by citizens or visitors into Canada, unless they are criminals, in which case they have to show a Criminal Certificate to the border patrol, they get stamped, the criminal pays some fee, and then he is free to carry the gun in. It is difficult, however, to get certified as a criminal, and a lengthy, boring process (one year at least has to be spent in sitting in one spot, no spitting), so if you come to Canada for a visit of a few month's length, or shorter, don't bother with getting a Criminal's Certificate. You can get a Criminal's Licence, and with that you get 24-7 access to overnight stays in county jails, which the travelling clergy from the Vatican and Wurms in Germany often get, those of the clergy that has vowed to perpetual poverty.

You won't find this information in brochures or at the Canadian embassy in Sidney, because thought this is the law, in Canada it is not necessary to know the law, it is only necessary to adhere to the law. The law says, (no joke) that ignorance of the law is no excuse or mitigating a circumstance when one breaks the law. So nobody bothers learning the law, which would be impossible anyway; we are based on precedence, our legal system is. If you can find a judement form seventh-century England in which an embezzler was found not guilty, then you can use that case to save your client's skin who is an embezzler. Nobody knows the law in Canada. Nobody, exactly for this reason: Nobody has access to all cases that can potentially be used as a deciding precedence. So not even the lawyers know the law. That's why they make so much money here.

snowella: And can't forget the snow flies

Oh, my goodness gracious. The snowflies.

A buddy of mine, the only friend I've ever had, told me about the snowflies on his lawn in the winter. I questioned him, he said, you can see them crawl on the cement sidewalk if you look close. I said... but they are insects, they can't survive in the winter by moving, they must hybernate or cocoon or something... It took me three minutes of conversation to realize he was pulling my legs.

So it's not original Paul Sp. eh?

Could you please tell me, snowella, if this snowflies thing is a Canadian folklore thing? I am not a native to this country. Thanks. I mean, excuse me. Sorry, I meant to say pardon me.

I used to play in this Bridge club after I retired, in which I met an old friend, from before times. He had been a survey engineer, or a mining engineer. He'd tell me of his buddies and legends in the Yukon and NWT who had been gruffy old grizzlies, and one day I told him, "You know, Steve, I just figured out the basic mentality of the prospector, who looks for gold and stuff, but he feels awkward in society, so they prefer the solitude and harsh living conditions to the flair and flamboyance of Toronto." The sentence was not this long in real life. He said "Yeah? What do you think?" I said, "they just mine their own business." Steve, a sweetheart that he was, got so upset. He was a real gentleman, and he just stopped short of calling me an a**hole.

Chionea is a genus of wingless limoniid crane flies. It consists of two subgenera, the holarctic Chionea and palaearctic Sphaeconophilus. About 40 species are currently recognized in the northern hemisphere, but there are probably several undescribed species. They are commonly called snow flies.

Adults occur during winter, where they can be observed walking over snow. They produce glycerol in their hemolymph, preventing them from freezing.

My snow blower is probably full of them...lol
