I'd like to hear from tenants that have had problems with their Landlords, what the problem was and how they handled it

In Ontario, if the landlord wishes to have their apartment(s) smoke free it must be advertised. The incoming tenant must respect the rules which can be enforced by the Health Department.
I previously lived in an apartment building. There were 5 apartments altogether. I was in the middle and had both upstairs and downstairs. At one point no one in the building smoked. A new tenant moved in and they smoked. And smoked on the balcony upstairs. The balcony was shared by all but had railings in between to divide the space. My bedroom was right beside the smokers and of course the smoke came in my room. Choke... I called the public health unit and the landlord. There was already a precedent set. The Health Unit contacted the Landlord and the landlord posted notices that there was no smoking on the property at all. One must smoke out on the street. BUT if the tenants don't complain and the landlord doesn't enforce the law...then all is for not.

No problems with Landlords...one just has to be savvy and informed. And I agree Gord, there are tenants from hell!!!
Just signed my lease for my new place and (knock on wood) am hoping for the best.
In most provinces there is strong protection for tenants. In Saskatchewa it is called the office of the rentalsmen and they advocate against slumlords and landlords that refuse to meet legal dwelling standards and to repair essential services. In my work with persons with disabilities I often witnessed them (as low income persons as well) being taken advantage of and living in next to squalor conditions. So...I would take the time to advocate for them in a diplomatic and organized fashion and was usually successful. wave

Same here; Toronto, Port Credit and Mississauga...filled with landlord crooks worse than eastern Europe. As a property manager in Toronto, so many tenants from hell, that each building should employ a 'Building Tamer' like the ol' West had 'town tamers' to bring law and order to the proverbial 'Wild West'. Seen from both ends, tenants were the worst; everything from setting up bowling games with pins and rolling the large balls across the floors, to setting up a real garden and growing veggies (came in and the tennant was watering with a hose and the floor collapsed under the weight...(yes, immediate eviction) to bringing in a live cow up 6 flights of stairs, then butchering it in their apt. (Blood seeped through to the apt. below, soaking the tenants in it while sleeping...23 people sleeping in shifts in another that was wall to wall mattress's...hey...ya got the next few days free...rolling on the floor laughing

I lived in a very nice basement suite in a house and the rent was good, but the landlord was an 80 year old dirty man that thought it was his right because it was his house, to come in the suite any time he felt like it, I did not stay there very long.
