Would you "protect" (lie for?) a family member or one of your children even if you knew without a doubt they had committed a crime?

No way if I knew that a family member or child of mine did a crime, you bet I would tell. Why should they get away with it let them face the music, and just maybe they won't be so quick to do some thing bad next time.

No,I've been waiting for the coppers to haul my daddy away someday!lol. No,seriously,I most likely wouldn't lie for anyone in my family.I don't have children, but that would be more difficult, and might depend on the severity of the crime if it was a theft and I'd want to protect my child from the jail system which I believe can make people come out even worse, the so called "jail mentality",but that would involve some really deep heart to heart talks. But if it would be a brutal crime I would never try to "protect" anyone who did something brutal to someone no matter how much I loved the person who committed the act.

NO. But made sure they have a good lawyer. And I would make sure (if child underage) that they did not speak to police alone.
Don't be intimated by police, know your rights, never volunteer information. If they think a party is guilty, they will try their damnest to prove it, even when they realize they have made a mistake. A lot of the time they won't back down, until they fall over the guilty party.
