For the heck of it I thought I'd mention this contest. There were 16 bands competing, all of them American except the Canadian band The Sheep Dogs. Now there are 2 left and The Sheep Dogs are one of the two. Their music is Southern rock sounding, a throw back to the 70's. The lead singer eerily sounds like Burton Cummings and there is definitely a Guess Who influence. They are from Saskatoon. If they win they will become the first unsigned act to be on the cover of The Rollingstone. After that you can guess they'll get a record contract. I think they have a really good chance of winning. The winner will be announced on The Jimmy Fallon show Aug. 1st.

Go Canada! Happy Canada Day everyone! canada
Vote if you like! You have until Canada Day to vote!

I hope I hope I don't get slammed too hard for my opinion here as I always wish the best for people.I enjoyed the first 2 songs much better than the 3rd one. The lead can sing but he in no way can be compared to sounding like Bertrand Cummings. The back up singing really left a lot to be desired. They remind of a band that played when I was younger, they did very well locally but there efforts to go national and play at larger venues was throwted because they just weren't quite good enough. That beiing said, I do wish them well. Just my opinion. Ken!!wave

That's OK, that's your opinion. And the 2nd vid I put up was the wrong one as I later found another version and forgot to switch it. The one I meant to put up is an acoustic version where his voice is a lot more Burton Cummings sounding. As soon as I heard their music I automatically thought he sounded like Burton. And after that when I googled them on the web it's mentioned in just about every article so I'm not the only one. And in that acoustic version you hear their harmonies even more and honestly I think it is quite good, even in their other vids. So I'm not really sure what you're listening to! laugh And the 3rd vid well, I think it was a last minute thing done in someone's basement so I don't really think it's their best version but still a decent rendition. I think they must be somewhat good if they are in the finals of this competition. But hey everyone has their own taste of what good music is.

These guys are already going national. And it isn't an easy task to make it in the music business. If they win in the contest we'll see if they blow up. There are alot of southern rock fans particularly in the US obviously.cheers

@Kenn I love all kinds of rock music. I like the southern rock thing but it's not my favourite genre either as I like heavier rock music the most. I don't mind listening to it though. I can appreciate the talent. And it's better than listening to Britney Spears! roll eyes I guess the last southern sounding rock band that I really liked was the Black Crowes. I loved them at the time. cheers

I like these guys too .... Sweet Home Alabama one of my favorites. What I always find interesting to note is that the major influences of our musical taste seems to be determined by what captured our interest as teens or preteens.

For me in my teens I loved mostly the heavier rock bands (some were hair bands lol!) but in my 20's I got into grunge music big time and that is my favourite genre. The 90's were the best music to me. The 2000's have been OK.

As for 70's Southern rock Lynyrd Skynyrd is the orginal I think. Next would be Allman brothers. Their influence is still felt by bands coming out of the South that have a harder edge to their music but that southern influence is still there.

So true! Preteen and teen years are developmental stages of a persons life and so much of who we become as adults is formed during these years. A certain song heard at a certain time can leave a lasting imprint! The influences of what family listens to, what friends listen, all contribute to what musical tastes a person develops. Even though many teens "rebel" against the music of the "elders", they have still been influenced by it.

So, a Skynyrd fan? wink I will never forget the day I caught my father "seceretly" tapping his toe to Sweet Home Alabama on the radio!rolling on the floor laughing rolling on the floor laughing What the heck?rolling on the floor laughing rolling on the floor laughing Then again, I used to spin a lot of his (and mom's) records too went they weren't looking!

rolling on the floor laughing rolling on the floor laughing rolling on the floor laughing The glam rock hair band days of the 80's! Some good stuff came out though!

Myself, I am all over the landscape when it comes to music. No genre is off-limits to me, but within any genre there is material I like, and material I couldn't be bothered with!

You are very knowledgeable! The Allman Brothers were just a bit before Skynyrd, a year earlier or thereabouts. And Duane Allman always stated that all he was really doing was taking "rock" (Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard, etc), some blues, mixing in some country, and then putting some southern flavour into the fray! Lots of great music has come, and is still coming out of this genre!

I remember listening to the music that came out of Seattle back in the day. That cross between indie, alt, and punk. I certainly remember the Pixies. But without a doubt Cobain was a pivotal artist in the genre! I most certainly remember the first time I heard Nirvana! Pearl Jam, Soundgarden (although they sure did borrow a lot from Led Zep!rolling on the floor laughing) all helped to develop and cement the genre!

And for while, I thought that a lot of the music that I liked back in my youth was lost to me,...and then along came YouTube!!rolling on the floor laughing rolling on the floor laughing rolling on the floor laughing rolling on the floor laughing I have found music I haven't heard in years on that ultra-addictive site!

I have no life now! I really must get some work done! Turn off the computer!

And so much music is available online now! Its fantastic! There have been a few though that I am STILL looking for!

I see you your knowledgeable about music also. Skynyrd as far as I know was formed before the Allman Brothers but if you are talking commercial success, yes you are right Allman brothers were successful first. And what Duane Allman said is very true.

I like all types of rock music from the 50's onwards.

You are correct about what grunge is. Led Zep definitely influenced alot of those bands and maybe that's why I like it so much cause I'm a big Led Zep fan. But you have to give Soundgarden way more credit than that! A lot of their music is punk/heavy metal inspired. And anyways, all music borrows from one another!

I remember first seeing Nirvana on Much Music with the Smells Like Teen Spirit video and was blown away. Who are these guys? I'm sad that I never got to see them but I've seen the Foo Fighters a few times. The thing with Nirvana's music is it sounds just as new today as it did back then. I've seen Pearl Jam a few times too and Soundgarden once and they have recently got back together and so will be seeing them at the end of the month. head banger head banger

rolling on the floor laughing rolling on the floor laughing professor "As far as you know" is absolutely correct! You are not a semi-knowledgeable, you know your stuff! Allman Brothers were first to commercial success, but LS formed five years earlier! I am fortunate to work with several people who are as interested in music as I am! We have traded so much music the past few years, I will be hard pressed to listen to it all before I pass away! I have seen Soundgarden, but not PJ,...simply not enough time or $$$ and I live some distance from the city!

Nice to have you in the Forum. Hang around, or at least pop in every once in awhile,....it sure can get quiet in here at times,..rolling on the floor laughing
