I hear of cases of 'certificate marriage' here in Greece - does anyone in CS Canada ever hear or know of same?
The refugee situation is getting out of control in many places, and people are getting desperate.
Whats worse - marrying someone you dont intend to spend your life with, or refusing them as their only hope?

confused

I do not know anyone who has personally done this,...but I have most certainly heard of it. To me it is not really a marriage, but more a "rescue mission" (as you stated that the situation involved was their "only hope").

I thought at first they could "marry", escape the situation, avoid consumating the marriage, and then have the union annuled,...but this would probably lead to a deportation situation.

Personally, if I knew of a person in this situation, where its was a dire situation, escape could be planned and refugee status applied for. Why? And this is my feeling, marriage is a life-long committment. But dire situation, a only hope,....what do you mean by "only hope"? I am curious? It makes it somewhat difficult to answer the question.

I've heard of it,but I have never known anyone personally who has done it.

Myself it's something I would never do even if offered money. With my terrible luck I would get caught, charged and convicted.Forget it.I really don't need the extra trouble.

A guy I used to work with was going to marry a woman from Argentina so she could stay in Canada. Many people told him that it probably wasn't the best idea, but he was determined to go through with it. The thing that killed the idea was a telephone call from the woman's mother (of all people), she told him that her daughter had tried this exact same thing with a man in Vermont & that she planned to divorce him afterwards and take whatever she could in the process. He confronted her about this, and wow, did her attitude ever change. She told him that if he wouldn't marry her then someone else here would, and was gone within two days. As far as I know he never saw or heard from her again.

Arverni:

WOW, was I ever glad to 'hear'/see your post! I've heard horror stories about people who actually wanted to marry so they could border cross/move, which did NOT work out and they ended up annulling the marriage, but your post really helped me to see that it's best to try and stay with home grown talent. Still, that's a great woman to warn you about her daughter's possible intention. Thanks for the information.
