Depends on what you mean by fairly well.

If you can live with below average wages, albeit cheaper housing, and higher cost of living that the average in Canada, then there would be numerous places to live in BC.

Stay away from the Okanogan in general, as in Kelowna, Vernon, and south, if you want affordable, but that's where you'd be best to look for work. The Kootenays are great, as for lifestyle, but little work, yet affordable to live, even if you have a mortgage.

It really depends on your skills, abilty, and drive to work, and what you're willing to give up for convieniences, as well as paying a little more for everything. It's a mixed bag, and all differs from each area to the next, and sometimes in as little as a couple hours of driving.

The only thing I can suggest is, to get out here and explore, get around and see each and every area you'd like to live in. There's a lot to see out here, and it isn't all the same. It's a very diverse province.

kid has summed it up well.

just gonna add...

the okanagan is expensive, and the cost of living is a bit higher here than many parts of canada. i would avoid the okanagan as long gone are the days of the orchards which have pretty much been replaced by vinyards, wineries and tourism.

what type of employment do you seek?
as that would make a difference to which area would be most beneficial for you.

as far as low budget.... i would consider the south cariboo to be more bang for your buck....(lac la hache, 100 mile, lone butte, or places like that, but the opportunities suck for employment depending on your skill sets. it's the same with the kootenays...soooo beautiful but hard to find employment.

but if you can afford it...BC is very beautiful, with infinite opportunities for free recreation.

You would be best off living in Vancouver area. There's a lot more choices and better resources for low income people. Loads of free stuff. There's also the compass here in BC where ever Trans-link is. Compass is only $45 a year for people with disability pensions. And there's a lot of part time work here as well. When on a disability pension here you can make up to $800 before any deductions start.
