wash2u: Twinbro, part of the mighty mislead about gst, Aust is better off with it. We had sales tax on items as high as 33.3% but we couldn't see it because it was all part of the sale price. Most common sales tax was 12.5%. Your Landcruiser, Land Rover, Nissan now only pays 10% import duty, not the 33.3% tarrif.

The almighty benefit was the Services part where the few who paid no taxes (Kerry Packer and my brother) finally had to contribute part of their income in paying some form of tax.
before the gst,i had 5 apprentices working for me,and was plastering 3 houses per month, when the gst came in,the extra materials neede to do a house plus the wages of the five apprentices caused me to find them other employment,as paying them weekly when builders only pay monthly was too costly, that with the bas[business activity statement ]which all self employed peoplenhave to pay, makes hiring people astronomical.gst sent 4 of my builders broke, they couldnt compete with the big guns, also people didnt want to pay the gst,it also bought out the shifties ,the ones that want discounts for cash so they dont pay gst.were lucky we only pay 10per cent some countries ive heard pay 23,and theyre makin up for that here by charging us a carbon tax.which again i have to put my price up again because manufactureres are adding between 1.80per cent and 2.40 percent for materials.houses are coming down with the interest rates, but soon they go up again with the new carbontax. At least with the old system we knew what we were getting ,now we get all sorts of new taxes and costs

The 1988 stock market sent a lot of overstetched builders broke when the bottom fell out of the market. My brother had just completed building a house and was valued at $1.4m. Crash came along and he could only get $0.8m. Sent him and partners under.

Brother-in-law completed a multi-storey building, owner decided to go bankrupt as he was over-extended in finances. B-in-law went under.

Mate working on Darling Harbour at the time. Builder refused to pay until he had completed all of his work. Bank wouldn't lend him any more to buy materials so he went under and the builder didn't have to pay him because he "didn't complete the project."

The GFC hit my brother bad enough that he had to go and work for someone after working for himself for nearly 40 years. He said it was the best thing he ever did as he knew how much money he would get each week, not have to do the BAS, no more private work insurances, and no more time running around looking for work.

But paying a lot more tax than before. First time his income has been less than mine and now paying nearly as much tax as me.
