I was waliking back from visiting friend in the dark of night and noticed two rats fighting on road right in front of me.I decided to stop the fight scared the winning rat away and picked the poor rat up and put him in bush.I could not hurt the rats even thought theycan be bad.

there are lots of different rats around, the native rat is not a pest and is rather sweet.
Then you've got the dirty rat variety
the king rat
the hospital grade disect in biology school rat
the fat cat rodents in parliament
then there's always the rat named Ben Michael sang about

I used to have pet rats and my fav was a sweet pale cream and white female I named Jenny, she was one of the sweetest cleanest little souls I have ever come across I took her everywhere with me when I was about 9yrs old never forgot her.sad flower

I feel sorry for Rats in a way as they dont know what they are' they are just trying to survive just like the rest of the living beings on this planet, cant say I would go up to a to a wild one and pat it though.
uh oh super

I dont know just felt sorry for the little thing.I was thinking that should not in future interfer with the law of nature unless a cat catched a birh then will do my best to save the bird in that scenario.

These rats were brown rats introduces ones have seen the native rat Kiore brought to new zealand by early maori pre european colonisation thsy are quite small in comparison to likes of norwegian shiprat. They are cute used to see them when worked on the bush eating berries and seeds of trees they are okay but can resort to eating native birds eggs and team up with your possums and cause havoc in forests here.

You saved a feral rat?
Do you have any idea of the diseases that you could have been infected with if the rat had bitten you?
All that you did was condemn the injured rat to a slow and miserable death as a result of its injuries. If the injured rat survived, you have served to weaken the gene pool by allowing the weaker (aka less genetically fit) rat to survive. You have done a disservice to both the injured rat and the whole of nature.

My "backyard" was a large swamp. As the Council allowed such a beautiful development (Sylvania Waters) to be developed, we had a "rat" problem. Especially affecting our chooks and pidgeons. We killed them as fast as we could. It was many years later we realised that these were a native "rat," not the plague rats from Europe.
