Cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey.

Meaning- a monkey was a tray on wooden fighting ships that held stacked up cannon balls.
When the temp dropped below freezing the metal " monkey" contracted and the cannon balls would roll off.

Hence the saying. Freeze the balls off a brass monkey

Must be my turn again. LOL

NO SPRING CHICKEN
Meaning- chicken farmers discovered that chickens born in the spring got a better price than those that had gone through a winter.
Farmers sometimes tried to sell the older ones as spring born chickens.
So came about the term
NO SPRING CHICKEN

Nature123: Just as well you stopped befor you did say it, or you could have got some dark looks.

Yeah, the Viet guy was always looking for an out if he could get some money. The Ethiopian would always ask me other expressions that are now politcally incorrect.

Okay, someone else in here. Who knows "3 Dog Night?"

S H I T

Back in the old days , they used to cart manure overseas in the bellys of boats , now these boats leaks , causing the manure to ferment. When the night watchman went down into the ships belly , he has a gas/kero lamp. Now seems that when manure ferments , it makes methane , which is explosive.

Needless to say , many a ship was lost to this , so when manure was transported later on , they marked S H I T on the side , which plainly meant " Ship High In Transit ".

Not sure if actually factual , but a pretty cool story non-the-less.

Lok out.

Drovers used to sleep with their dogs to keep warm. If it was really cold they would judge that they needed three dogs to sleep warm.

Anyone heard the explanation that "pommie" comes from P.O.M.E that convicts supposedly had printed on their clothes to denote that they were "Prisoners of Mother England"? Seems a bit daft to me but are there other explantions of where the slang word for Englishman comes from?

Not sure what you are implying? This is the origin of the word s h i t?
Definitely not as languages closely related to English have similar words, eg Sheisse (German) schijt (Dutch)....

Jaywalker. Small town overseas the birds use to walk in to town and being frightened by all the commotion would walk every where on the roadway.

Hence the word jaywalker
