Carl96190: .... part two
The real estate agents did not like these stories. Because they were major advertisers, when the real estate agents demanded that Halpin go he was fired.
There are lower forms of scum than real estate sales people, but not many in my experience. Drug dealers generally have more morals.
Back to the TV shows.
The producers (who are not journalists) have a mindset that puff pieces about neighbourhood fence disputes, weight loss and celebrity relationships are what the viewers want.
Add to that the lack of training of the faux journalists and management decrees about sacking anyone whose work results in a writ and you have a formula for drivel to be presented as news and current affairs.
As for sport, do not know and do not care.
I would rather stick toothpicks in my eyes than watch thugby league, cricket, or any of the other popular sports.
Six training sessions per week at the dojo and the occasional tournament gives me all the sport that I need.

Thankyou - as I really didn't fully understand why those programmes like 4 corners, 60 mins had changed their formulas to as you call them to "puff pieces"

now part 2
Reading an article on Fairfax vs Langcock

My recollection when Packer, Murdock and the English guy (?black) were all vying for tv/newspapers rights, the government stepped in and protected the freedom of press from takeovers... so if that happened then, why are the government today trying to interfer with Langcock from sinking her money (all of 17%) into the Fairfax group ... I really don't understand the mind-set ... particularly as you have pointed out traditional news is being replaced by digital - just like vinyl records have been replaced by digital music....

It is a sad state of affairs for sure. The same can be said here in Cansda as well. I started a newspaper in a small town almost 10 years ago. The first priority was always the community and our readers. We generally left politics to the big daily papers, because they would not know what to do a real story involving real people to save their lives. Anyway, I have had to close my paper because of a nasty divorce I am going through. It should be done within a couple of weeks. Meanwhile I am looking for a warmer climate and a chance at adventure. I wish you the best of luck. I apologize for the lateness of my reply. Just went 28 hours without power due to a tornado hit about 80 kilometres away. cheers

The market you served is the one most likely to be the last to fall to the march of technology.
Suburban or small-town newspapers fill a niche that is too small for television.
I would suggest that you open another such newspaper, once the divorce is finalised.
Were I the publisher of such a newspaper, I would continue to print hard copy but I would fill the cyber void with an on-line edition. That way you will 'own' the medium into the future and survive the march of technology.
I can understand your desire for somewhere warmer than Canada. I have been told that in some places the engine sumps are fitted with heating elements so that the car can be plugged in at night to stop the oil freezing. To someone such as myself who lives in a climate that could be compared with California or Florida, that sort of cold is difficult to imagine. It is mid-winter here and the temperature range today is 12 to 20 degrees centigrade. australia

Hi Carl,
Opening another paper is my plan, the only question is where. Since I will be free as a bird, anywhere on the planet is a possibility.
Australia has a couple of things that appeal to me... ocean, temperature, and rodeo. I have covered rodeo in the past and photgraphing the events gives a great high, as I have some good skills.
It is true about plugging in my car overnight in winter. It is a must when the winter here in Saskatchewan can be anywhere between -25 C and -50 C, before adding the wind factor.
In the paper I just closed, we also were online. Go to
