Went to Bunnings today and bought a couple of cans of spray paint.

Usual procedure, had to wait at the counter until someone was available to unlock the caged shelves .. I assume this situation has come about because of the boneheads who go around defacing other peoples' property (or like to sniff it?)

What are your views about graffiti (when permitted and encouraged) on buildings and walls?

Do you see it as art?

I can see how graffiti is an art... there are alleys in Melbourne that are fascinating and well known. The works always evolve.

However, I can also see that it costs the tax payers a great deal of money when public property is tagged and graffitied. Tagging is dreadful, that's where the 'artist' just leaves their calling card and there is no real value to it other than for them to be memorialised in their friends eyes.

Absolutely... I love it... if its done well, I am in awe of the efforts.. ( but not the tags - that is just stooopid)

n just to say Serene, in Brussels... in the city there are lots of really good scenes painted on the sides of buildings, and it makes it so interesting... along with the other 'fun' structures in the streets. wave

I don't mind the artistic forms, but not the taggers. Usually they won't deface an artist's work, that's one of the reasons why they sometimes commission these works on prominent walls.
We had a constant problem with our onsite instrument cabinets being graffitied so we got a pro to paint the whole cabinet for a modest fee. This lasted for a couple of months before the juveniles tagged over it.
I guess they are staking out their territory like dogs and male cats.

No its not art to me .... I loathe any form of graffiti ...

Bunning's here on the Gold Coast have the spray cans out in the open at their Burleigh Heads store ..

I buy the spray cans from Super Cheap ... they are cheaper and the nozzle does not clog up like the bunning's cans do .. drinking

It is beautiful when done in the right places, and not just scribble. not the crap some spray. On the way to the gold coast they have pics on the cement walls, looks good. You see the trains go through with it on, that is vandalism to me and looks cheap.

I love graffiti to me its the best street art there is but not when its just tags or stupid lines. Some of them take your breath away when you see them. and spray painting with a can is one of the hardest things to learn. I dont care if they paint on private property aslong as its good.

pisceslady7: It costs millions to clean up public walls and transport each year. If caught, these kids should have to use their dole money to buy paint and re-paint the damaged areas. If they are not receiving the dole, then the parents should have to pay a percentage and the kids work off the rest by cleaning off graffiti.

Murals, in designated places, are not graffiti and are an asset. The rest are by 'bored/stupid/irresponsible' people. And yes, I work with teens, love them andd realise the tagers are a minority

thumbs up thumbs up thumbs up

But not sure about making the parents pay?

I think the police should take anything that these *cough cough* graffitti artists own - if they have anything - like a PC, laptop, car, sound sytem, mobile fone, and graffitti that? cool

See how much they like it then? If anybody else's private property is fair game then lets go with that sunshine? :peace

I've been a youth and community worker / Teacher /Trainer/ Programs Director and probably run more than 1000 programs, events, workshops and community Forums. I have seen exquisite pieces which have been commissioned to the most ridiculous acts of pure vandalism. There are myriad types and styles that come under the umbrella of Graffiti. Just as in many fine art galleries there are many different styles. Tagging is true graffiti, the rest come under spray art. Spray artists despise Taggers as much if not more than the general public. Their acts of vandalism and the financial costs to the community cause true spray artists to be viewed in the same negative light. To highlight the difference and to give spray artists the recognition they deserve and their medium as a bona fide Art status, a local RSL (who you would have thought would have been the most staunch critics) commissioned a work for a 30'x 14'Brick wall. When the work was completed and was unveiled there were tears in the eyes of the Vet's that turned up that day. There on the wall were detailed images (obviously taken from historic photos) not just representing every arena the ANZACS had participated in but also every area of the service both male and female. This Mural has been up now about seven years and to my Knowledge has never been defiled. This went a long way in bringing healing and understanding between the generations. From that time many other commissioned pieces have been requested by both local business and also council. Taggers are wannabe's and unfortunately a big part of the problem is the thrill aspect and the covert nature of Tagging. Also it is becoming deadly as Taggers try to access greater areas of difficulty and mortal danger to place their Tags. Each new Tag offers a challenge to any budding wannabe.

Hi ah SaltwaterWine

That is so nice.... have you got a pic to share??

My boys did lots of graffitti via the council... they had permission and were able to practise their skills on designated walls..
They had 100's of photos that they would go around taking, and both now are in art fields... ( one an architect, the other in advertising) so for them, it was all good. Yes, they hate taggers...

Mind tho... I did a jukebox in spray paint..for the SA rocknroll club years ago when it first started... Its not as easy as you'd think...
