I recon there's some truth to online shopping hurting retail. It's nearly impossible to find a decent book store these days. Only book stores around that I can find are those annoying cheapo ones that don't pay anyone to organise the books, so you can't actually find anything you're after.

Hi ah BigBad
So, you buy online too... ??? We have a beaut bookshop here locally, really fine books, and the owner has a computer which magically can produce anything you are after... grin

And I agree with you about there prolly is some truth to online shopping, but the way I see it... working long hours, having a bunch of stuff to do on weekends around house and cleaning chores, visiting family/friends..etc.. I find there is not enough time to browse around the shops and buy something that I truly need and like.

Not enough people spend the time out to SEE what is there. It is easier to sit at home and not face people by using online shopping. And it is usually so much cheapar to buy from someone with no overheads, just one person in a warehouse, or who can order from a warehouse and forward it on with minimal downtime.

Having been in retail where I could sell it cheaper than the big chains, a lot of people believed that the big chains could always supply goods at lower prices.doh

Hi Wash, that is my point... I dont have the time to be mooching about the shops...

and besides, you should know me well enough, that I am a label gal.. so the designers I like and their items are far easier to search online than to walk in and out of stores, looking for the specific designer labels.

and there is that too... like the Lindberg glass frames I bought online yesterday... grin There are only 2 shops in Adelaide that sell Lindberg.. frameless eyewear. In the shop in the city, the pair I tried on was going to cost me $690. Got the same thing online from UK.. for $260 (incl shipping) lost on the currency exchange, but gained overall. applause cheering

Merri,

This explains the piles of books that I have waiting to read and the CD's I own. I have easily a dozen or more CDs that have never left the plastic because I became so engrossed in buying more.

As for the books, now I have to try and resist. Although, I stayed in Melbourne a few weeks ago, in the city and there was a book sale next door...Resistance was futile.

I have noticed that the price of books has dropped substantially...I picked up some incredible books there for $5.

I have determined that it will help local sales though... I definitely need a second bookshelf. grin

hmmm The debate on ...On line shopping so far I haven't ventured into this type of shopping think it freeks me a bit regarding being scammed. As for on line shopping taking over hmmm it seems to be the case can see why if people can purchase items so much cheaper on line than the stores that is a plus also they would have the chance to scan through the tons of stuff available on line where's if out & about shopping you wouldn't get to see a fraction of the items you can see as you would on line shopping. So the plus side to on line shopping is yep! be a buyers market. The downside it is a form of gambling once you are hooked you keep spending and spending and a lot of the stuff you purchase on line you would never have bothered to buy from the shops in the first place .... My theary is if it isn't in your face to see and you needed to get in your car to drive to shops you would be less likely to go out & buy.

professor JMO!

So Whaddya I think....... I think on line shopping will eventually take over years from now a lot of shopping centers will go broke because they cannot compete price wise. Like the credit card it dominates the world now and along with the credit card things like on line shopping is one of them as they say everything at thier finger tips.

BUT! my friendsprofessor maybe not in our time... though it is happening to some people now they will shut their doors and just shop on line for everything food - clothes etc! Sad really because a trip to the shopping center for a few hrs is good for us, a walk around the center being amongst society is good just interacting in life be in it. having a coffee with a friend or just the fact of being out and about , online shopping Na! I will give it a miss stick to the way I am a bit of old school doesn't hurt anyone. smile

I even had to get my daughter to book my flight for the Melbourne meet as I do not do the on line shopping thingy down to even booking my tickets. Call me old fashion that's me.

I beg to differ there is a fantastic book shop near me having said that it is second hand books but one of the best I have ever been in it's organized and clean well run & huge, if you are after a certain book they will take your details and phone you when available. Ok now and then we might want a new book out well most new book stores have the lastest novels.

Calm down merri comfort you say that like it's a bad thing .. repeat after me

'Shopping is gooood, shopping is gooood' laugh

In reply to the issue of brick and mortar businesses taking a hit, it's been suggested that one of the things that could help address this is

SERVICE!!

How many times do we walk into a retail store and the staff practically run and hide?!! and that's if they actually notice that someone has entered the store doh

Being in the industry, I hear so many comments regarding this issue and my thoughts are that if people get top-notch service they will think twice before going home and placing an order online conversing

Ooops sorry,

Hi Serene and all that replied.wave wave

I recently went to have my eyes tested, and being Ihad used the same frames for 7 years, I thought I might get another pair.
I buy Lindberg, because the frames are very light... around 2.3 grams. otherwise I get a headache from heavier frames.

Lindberg do not sell online directly to retail.. only to shops.. and only two shops in Adelaide.

I looked sadly at the choice... hardly any.. was a bit dissappointed. so I asked the girl...

" When are you getting another order in"
she replies
" When I feel like it"
so I asked
" and when do you think that might be"
she replies
" When I feel like it"
So I picked a pair from the small selection..and said... I'd come back in Oct and have them...

Now Lindberg frames retail around $690
so, yes, if I am spending this kind of $$ and I know they will last for another 7 years I wanted a bit of a choice..
So the girl throws me a card and says ... here, you can look at them online... knowing full well that LooK is the only thing I can do.

So, rather dejected, I spend 7 hours over last two weeks looking to see if I could find something online...

Last week, I did Ebay... and yes, they have them for sale from the UK..

I bought a pair online.. for 150 pounds =$223 and although I lose on the currency, I gain after all..

So when they arrive, I am going to have a bit of satisfaction taking these glass frames in to my optometrist, and asking for my prescription lenses to be made to fit these glasses..

and I am going to say....
" Thanks for the tip. I found them online"grin
cheering applause

Hi Curly,
wave

I guess that while some of us shop online, there will always be people who dont.. and I am sure that the amount of people that dont well over rides those that do.

I know that shopping around is fun sometimes, and I love window shopping too... but its a time factor..

I have bought some really nice things online.. so far about 10 cashmere items that I cannot get here in Adelaide.

I am currently looking for Christmas pressies.. and managed to buy 4 jumpers in cashmere for my sons for christmas pressies ( 2 each) Now, if I had to buy 4 cashmeres jumpers here, I would have to ring and go to every shop in Adelaide looking for them.. I just do not have time to do that... and If I had to pay (as I did in Scotland) full retail price, that would be around $1000 + but online, on a sale, I managed to get them for less than $300 including $79 shipping.

So its worth it... dont you think??rose

Morning merri I can see your point of view re shopping on line for items being cheaper BUTif.... most people hadn't started shopping on line I believe they would be better off financially. My theary is it is an addiction of sorts with on-line shopping at your fingertips it would be an easy way to get hooked. It may be great you are getting a bargin but do you really need everything you are buying

Example if you hadn't seen the cashmere jumpers on line you most likely would have looked for different Xmas pressys in the shops at a suitable price that is just as nice too. Still everyone to their own ideas JMO!dunno

Good morning to you too Curly, wave

After spending all my money on the house and garden for the last couple of years, I finally realised that I certainly needed some clothes, lots of them... and for about the last 6 months, acutely aware that I was starting to look really daggy, I would promise myself to go out to the shops on weekends, but something in the garden always needed my attention, and then of course, I set aside weekend time to catch up with my grandchildren, so as time went by, I realised that getting to the shops was not happening...

As you know, last April when I had the month off work, I worked solidly in my garden to build those walls.. so I never got to the shops, in any case, I was dead broke.

Being that Mond - Frid is out... I decided that online is the only way to go...

On Friday nights thru out winter, I wont go walking the city streets, because its dark and cold.

So that is what started me off. Now I realise that I can get what I need, and

re Serene's point about Service in the shops...

Most clothing stores on line have a concierge and you can start a conversation around ... is it true to size or cut on the big or small size, and also, there are many reviews for the products, and most ladies put up their height, and weight, and whether they have hourglass or pear shapes etc, so you get a pretty good idea and lotsa help.

Hi Merri wave I bought so many books and CDs online that I haven't read the books yet.

I buy shoes online from a company that has free shipping both ways. It's like sitting in a shoe store and trying them on and then saying, no, don't like them.

I don't buy clothes online but I have bought kitchen items.

Even bought this computer online. If I didn't like or want it I could return it to the same store in the real world.

It doesn't surprise me that shops are closing up. The post office her in the U.S. is also having a hard time with people using email instead of a postage stamp.

When was the last time you called a travel agency for airline tickets. That too is now done online.

The day will come when we don't use paper money anymore and shopping malls will be a thing of the past.

Now if they could just make a gasoline product that was cheap.

Hi Monty...wave

I buy from a place in South Carolina... strange hey, but its a great online store..

Yes, a petrol product on line.. mmmm I wonder how that would work... lol.

I guess its called progress , and for the moment its working out fine, the shipping costs really do outweigh the retail costs here, so until they change the rules, I will continue to buy online..

Well I think if I was a bricks and mortar retailer I would be more than a bit worried. The latest figures from the 2 biggies Myers and DJ's both had drops in sales/profits, DJ's by 40% I think it was?

Time to shop, lack of stock, size? colour?, expensive or lack of parking, high rents for shops, and yes in some cases lack of customer service are all reasons why people are shopping online rather than in 'shops'.

There is no doubt online shopping has given the shops a knock along with the GFC, job losses, less money around but some places are moving with the times - if not they will go broke.

Myself I couldn't order shoes or clothes on line, I have a hard enough time in 'shops' trying on stuff before I get what I like in the size I want. Having said that I take my oldies shopping and occasionally go in the bigger stores and have not seen anything for myself in the last 12 mths that I have thought "Oh wow, love that, gotta have it!" Lot of rubbish around, some stuff is just so overpriced. But am loving the new spring colours.

My neighbour has the Aust Post contract for delivery parcels in this area and as gone from a one man van to putting on 2 more guys in the last few years mainly due to people online shopping. Couriers must have picked up a lot of business too.
