i live on the down side of a steep hill. my neighbours yard is about level with the roof of my carport. They have a big black laborador with a very loud bark, and he likes to bark alot. i have two small yappy dogs too so we tolerate each others pets and have managed to live if relative harmony for the past three years that I have lived here. Whenever anyone comes to my place they get a very noisy reception and we usually make a hasty retread to another part of the property so he stops. And the neighbours are pretty good, they will call him away when they are home.

So heres the problem.

A tradesman came to measure up to do some work on the carport. it was while both my neighbours and I were not home and the dog apparently barked frantically at him at his head height the whole time he was there. Very annoying to him. So today he rings and says My workmen will be there tommorrow to start work at 8 am and will be there all day. Please ask your neighbours to keep the dog away from the fence as my blokes don't want to put up with the barking all day while they work." Fair enough I thought.

So this afternoon i go over and knock on the door, expain the situation and ask nicely if they could do that for me. Well I get a very frosty reception. "we will both be at work" they say. (He's retired)we will have to see what we can do." Frosty silence.

I left apoligising to them and saying i hope I hadn't caused them too much trouble.

I get home and think "Hang on a minute" Was it unreasonable to ask them to keep a big persistent large barking dog away from my fence line while had some work done? They know what he's like. but acted as if they were being inconvenienced. And why was i apologising. Perhaps they could have achnowledged their dogs persistent barking would be annoying. I just don't get people sometimes. But I want to stay on friendly terms with my neighbours, of course. Makes life easier.

How would others handle a tricky situation with neighbours?

Sheesh, that's a tricky one LiLee uh oh

Seems you've done everything right so far, not sure there's anything else you can do without causing friction with the neighbours confused

How pig-headed of them though mumbling

I feel for the workmen I had this problem at one of my jobs with a big barking dog it barked all the time I was at work to the point I had a massive headache. I complained to people who I was working for and they said they would do something about it! 3 times I went to work and 3 times the same constant barking. I solved the problem I ceased to work for these ignorant people. They asked me to come back I declined I do not need my head to be done in by barking dog! very mad

I say just get rid of DOGS makes life easier for everyone. All they do is bark at nothing keep you awake dig holes in the garden have to clean up after them and they cost a fortune in dog food.australia

Had had my last dog for the best part of 14 years as my one constant friend. Only barked when lawn mowers and whipper snippers were going.

And when the neighbours had there hoses going, especially during the drought restrictions. He was a dobber of the first order.

Simple solution for when the tradies are there is to throw a bit of meat over with 1/2 a mild sleeping pill in it. If that doesn't work, try slipping a few laxatives in the meat and let the neighbours deal with it.rolling on the floor laughing rolling on the floor laughing

That was decent Tone... better than not acknowledging the problem. thumbs up

I have a friend that I have known for 34 years. She has 2 dogs with a smallish back yard.. tiny in fact... I stopped visiting because the dogs will stand/scratch at the door, and bark the whole time I am there... I just could not stand it...

If they come in, the bounce all over me... ( I dont have dogs, and I am not accustomed to dog slob) so that was a pain, then one of them peed in the house as well, so she did not want that..and clearly, did not want me to see that either..

So in the end we'd have to have a cuppa out the front where the dogs could not see me... or go for a walk to chat... It was never a peaceful visit...

sigh

Taking dogs for a walk is cruel. Dogs love to sleep.

Dog-sitting a 14 yo dog who is about 2 foot long, and nearly that wide. All she does is sleep 23 1/2 hours a day. Only wakes to eat and crap. Has learnt after 5 days that when I open the cupboard or fridge, it is for me and she gets nothing. Even have to call her now to let her know she is going to get fed.

But a lot to do with dog behaviour is how you train them and how you deal with their behaviour. Dogs are protective and will bark either to protect property or people, or because they are totally bored from being neglected.

I spend a fair amount of time working and love to go away on weekends when I can. Okay, a dog would only have me around and awake for about 5 hours a day and I do have some things I want to do during that time. Like relax, cook dinner, and relax some more. A bit unfair on the dog and I do see how he would get bored. And I do hate doing my holidays and having to leave him behind with strangers. Main reasons I won't have another one.

And yes, after 10 months of missing my best mate who has been by my side through many trials and tribulations, I couldn't do that again to another animal as much as I love having such a warm welcome coming home each time.

It is quite heartbreaking when you loose a close mate. I have a small dog, he comes on holidays with us, going to Bribie island for a week next month. They are a great companion.
