Part of todays news:
The Rural Fire Service has issued an emergency warning to residents living in the upper Landsdowne area near Port Macquarie, on the state's mid-north coast.

A bushfire covering 15 hectares is burning out of control in severe fire danger conditions and it is expected to impact on properties in GumGully Road.

About 30 rural properties in the area are under threat.

I don't know about the area you are talking about Rob but it has been so hot and so dry up here, hardly any rain in at least 8 weeks, probably more. High, strong winds been around for over a week. Got that feeling about it?? Hope not, need a good drenching soon. sigh

The town I lived in in NSW, Helensburgh had bad fires on Xmas Day 2001, 15 houses burnt down then, we had to leave the house which we had just sold! Looked like ground zero when we went back.

Helensburgh.....surrounded by National Park and the Parks people never learnt from the bad ones 10 years earlier where most of the Royal National Park was burnt out.

The problem is that these burn-offs are now set down by Govt Departments where everything is so far planned in advance that it is scheduled for xx/xx/xxxx and MUST be done on that day, "We are scheduled to do the burn-off on this day and must be done," regardless of the conditions.

After the Wilsons Prom disaster of years ago when National Parks lost personel because they hadn't looked at the forecast, I thought it would have been mandatory to look ahead. Friend in Rural Fire Service (NSW) is always sprouting about the need to look at the forecasts before burning.

Maybe this is linked to the Govt's policy of using the Indigenous burn-off lessons. When food is scarce, burnt it out. Oops, that is usually during the hot dry months as fires don't burn so good during wet seasons when game is around.

i lived on a ridge Upper Landsdowne was on other side of. Every year the farmers lit up to reduce combustible martial, the area fire controler was first to light "Old Doug" he knew what he was doing. Once he rode up on his horse and told me to light here and there NOW, so i followed his instructions to the latter. A massive fire jumped up rolling on the floor laughing and the local drug growers all turned looking sad. But Old Doug was right, told me how far the fire would go and that's is far as it went. He knew what he was doing, then these lunatics straight out of university were given some sort of inherently non existence authority and stopped all burning off throughout the whole area.
I've friends living across the road from Gun Gully Road and can only hope they are ok.
The bush along both sides Gun Gully boarders the Yarret Forest and if that get's going proper the fire would likely join up with the other out of control fire way up in Armadale, 100km away

My brother did a burnoff next to his farm in that State Forest most years. Until they made access easier by a new fire trail that led to more fires starting by trail bike riders and maybe a few 4wd drivers. But after the bad fires around 2001, the local RFS did some stuff to make it less acessible by the general public resulting in less activity. And he does his burn-offs again to reduce the hazards.

Especially after the fires had burnt him out and it took nearly 7 years to re-establish his business on his farm.

Some in Qld to however NSW seems to have quite a few buring

About 800 firefighters have been working to control fires across New South Wales, with hot and windy conditions fanning 80 blazes.

About 30 of those fires are out of control.

New South Wales Rural Fire Service spokeswoman Bridie O'Connor says they are expecting the fire threat to ease today but it is still dangerous.

"We are looking at slightly more favourable conditions however we've still got some very high fire danger," she said.

Fires burning near homes at Upper Lansdowne on the mid-north coast near Port Macquarie and Georges Junction near Armidale remain a concern.

Yesterday more than 100 homes were issued with emergency alerts, however the threat was downgraded overnight at both fire fronts.

Yesterday it was 37.6 degrees, hot winds, all you could smell was smoke.
There are so many fires burning, some which they just can't get to, so they just let them go until they can. In my area there always seems to be fires. Been evacuated once many years ago. Scary stuff and NO rain, plz rain.. help

During the bad 2001 fires around Sydney, my brother spent more than a week with his bulldozer clearing firebreaks around the neighbouring village. Didn't take anything from RFS other than sandwiches and drinks, paid for the fuel himself (they only told him later that they would have supplied it).

Year later, and the local Council watched a fire burning near my brother's place and decided (in consultation with the SES) it would not be a problem and told the RFS just to keep a eye on it (Council does put a lot of money into the local brigade). Ended up burning all of his business section, and was lucky not to get to the house but only because the local brigade decided enough was enough and decided to move in on the that weekend without Council approval. But a bit late as was seen.

He and the local brigade now work very closely now without Council, my brother being the local who helps the local brigade with 'training days.' He tells them when he plans to burn off, depending on the conditions, and he intends to have a BBQ that day if anyone wants to come along for the 'training day.' It works well for all of them.
