While at the doctors last year, I picked up a National Geographic from 1970s (it was that or the Dolly mags). Had an article about global warming affecting the worlds climates.

The North Atlantic had risen by 1 degree and at the same time there were droughts across Central Africa where they hadn't had them before. Trying to raise some hype way back then. What they failed to note was that the North Atlantic is warmed by the Gulf Stream and if the equatorial waters/land masses are warming, then it makes sense that the North Atlantic would also warm up.

The Gulf Stream flows clockwise up the North American coast, passes Greenland and Iceland before hitting the Norwegian coast (effectively stopping the fiords from freezing up and keeping access to the Baltic Sea open) before heading back along the coast of Europe towards Africa, Azores, Canary Islands and back to where it started.

Very handy for shipping as the current gets them going that bit faster.

The flow of the Gulf Stream takes it away from the Equatorial regions and dumps it in the top of the North Atlantic, probably explains all the snow in top of USA & Cananda.
