More than 500 people have been injured after a meteor strike in central Russia, the country’s interior ministry said.
Fragments of at least one meteorite were seen falling from the morning sky in the Chelyabinsk region at around 9am local time, around 1,500km east of Moscow.
Witnesses described feeling a pressure wave and hearing explosions overhead as the object hurtled to earth. Windows shattered and there were localised power cuts, sparking panic among residents.
The emergencies ministry said that 20,000 rescue workers had been dispatched to help the injured and locate those needing help.
The defence ministry said it had sent soldiers to the sites of impact.
Police urged people to remain calm and asked those who had been injured to call a special hotline.
Russia’s Ministry of Interior said more than 500 people had reported injuries, with most requiring treatment for minor cuts and bruises caused by broken glass and damage to buildings. No serious injuries have been reported.
The local office of the National Emergencies Ministry said in a statement: "A meteorite disintegrated above the Urals (mountain range in central Russia), partially burning up in the lower atmosphere.
"Fragments of the meteorite reached Earth, falling in sparsely populated areas in the Chelyabinsk region."
Many drivers in Russia have video recorders fitted in their cars in case of accidents or disputes with traffic police. Footage from these uploaded to YouTube show the fireball crashing to the ground.

Must have read it earlier today, happened about seven hours ago, mixture of comments from Russian news sites

Moscow time:
current time is 3:23 PM Friday, February 15, 2013 (MSK)
Time in Moscow, Russia

The first reports came in around 7:55 a.m. Moscow time, which means it occurred 7 hours ago

"It wasn't a meteor falling, it was the Americans testing out weapons," Zhirinovsky said in comments carried by RIA-Novosti.
“No space objects have been discovered, as of midday today,” the agency’s spokesperson reported, adding seven aircraft have been scrambled to search Chebarkul, Yetkulsk, Satkinsk and Ashinsk districts, as well as the towns of Miass and Zlatoust in the Chelyabinsk region.

On Friday, at 09:21 local time, a bright glow was seen in central Kopeisk, and about two minutes later, a sound wave swept the city.

Radiation is within the normal level there. Radiation and chemical monitoring is underway, the press service reported.

A meteorite broke up over the Ural region on Friday morning. Its fragments partially burnt up in the atmosphere. A source at the Central Military District said the military were searching for the meteorite fall crater 50 km away from Kopeisk.

The number of injured people is now said to be over 1000.
Another report, quoting a Russian military source, said that a meteorite had been "intercepted" by Russian anti ICBM rockets and blown into fragments.

That could explain the explosion that was reported! But we will never know if what would off happened if it hit the ground? As a mass?

It makes me wonder?

They reckon the explosions were sonic booms.
