robplum: every few miles highways in Victoria got signs with similar words to the effect your gunner go to sleep, your gunner go to sleep, your gunner go to sleep, your gunner go to sleep, your gunner go to sleep...
Just recently (first time this year i left the mountain) i noticed 5 signs that since have been told cost $850,000 each, that tell you the distant to next town take a break, which is ok, but makes me wonder what sort of clown dreamed that up

Rob if you really believe that one of those road signs cost 850,000 then i've got a bridge in Sydney you might be interested in buying.beer

For that sort of money, I might have a few roads you can get for better price.

Rarely used, old lady only travelled it in her horse and buggy. Fantasitic views, once in a lifetime offer - okay, you may fall over the cliff but that would be a life-time expeience.

Now Justjim, if the one you are offering is the one I am thinking of, the cost of maintenance far exceeds your not so generous offer.

wash2u: Moving to Victoria, I lost my Australian Drivers License for a Victorian Drivers License. Yes, they do have Australian Drivers Licenses. And I do feel that losing my Australian Drivers License an insult.

But I will quibble about the difference between a professional driver and a truck driver. I do hold a truck license but would never consider that a qualification to being a "professional driver."

I have held my license for 44 years and still have a lot to learn. And 4th generation involved in motor sport.

Was caught out by a "professional driver" last Thursday when driving along with nobody behind me when the "professional driver" in the bus put his blinker on and pulled out. I slammed on my brakes and ended up with a milk container broken over the carpet. And then he pulled up 200 metres later. Some may have the Road Rules to support their stupid actions but there is also some common sense involved.

I deal with real professional drivers every day of the week through my work and in my travels. There is a big difference between "professional drivers" and truck drivers.

I get paid too drive a truck unsupervised everyday! From the moment I leave the gate till I get back it is me in charge! I have a map and a truck! If you can think off a more professional driver that is required to works 363 days per year then let me know? I only do a 4 day week now because of my injury, but realistically I am on call 7 days per week, I don’t stop until the truck dies or my round is finished!
Sure F1 drivers get paid more, but they don’t do the traffic I do?

professor cheers

Be glad we don't live in Russia, where the winter driving conditions are terrible! And the drivers are so bad, you can't get insurance unless you have a dash cam. (Allegedly.)

Couldn't be bothered with doing all the other stuff you did.

The Victorian RoadSafe groups are doing what they can to reach out to kids in schools. Gippsland RoadSafe run the 'Hypotheticals' in the schools for Year 11 kids, other groups have different names. When RoadSafe Outer South East (ROSE) was running (now amalgamated into a much larger RoadSafe group), they ran similar sessions.

I attended a few ROSE sessions and it was very educational. Group throwing a tennis ball from one kid to another, calling out that kids names as they threw it to them. The coordinator sped it with the kids having to speed up the next time. Then the coordinator started bring out more balls and then had everyone laughing as some missed the catch or threw it away as another was arriving. The point of the exercise is that a lot of things are happening around you and a small distraction (names being yelled out left right and centre in this case in this case) can distract you when driving. What about the phone ringing, text messages coming through, changing music, chatting to mates in the car, eyeing off that nice butt when driving?

ROSE also had the SES attending showing how the Jaws of Life were used to cut through a real car to get someone out (no-one inside at the time). This was followed by a slide presentation showing damaged cars they had to cut open (no blood and guts so the guys were a bit disappointed).

The closing presenter was a guy in his late 20s who looked like any other person his age. But had to carefully read through what he had to tell about the crash he was in as a passenger. He was slow in reading his story, and it seemed that they had just dragged someone illiterate off the street.

As he came to the end of his story, he explained (still reading) a bit about the brain injury he received which had affected his memory. His ending was "I have presented this same story more than 100 times to groups such as this. I have to read it every time because it is too much for me to remember. Without it being written down, I would not be able to tell my story. Please don't let this happen to you."

I average 50,000kms a year on the roads. Okay, I am not a long haul truck driver who usually does 4 times or more than that.

F1 drivers have to negotiate a track at 250-300km/hr and they do have others to consider. I have been involved in dirt circuit (brother at 22 and mother at 44 were ACT Champions), speedway ovals and racetracks such as Oran Park and Warwick Farm with bitumen circuits. Very simple as everyone is going the same way.

But driving on real roads means people are coming in both directions. Having to put up with the idiot bus drivers and garbos is a continual nightmare. "Hey, I put my blinker on.....stupid idiot should have mega-slammed on his brakes because the Law is on my side. Who cares if no one is behind him and I could have waited 2 seconds for him to pass. The Law is on my side."
