Obscuritan: And what reward would a robot want, other than being plugged into a power point to recharge?
The driving force at present for robot development is war. Eg, clearing mines, blowing up suspicious packages, looking around corners, even firing a machine gun remotely. And drones of course.

I agree with you Obs. They will be made to do all the dirty work that are too dangerous for us humans. I was dreaming of another sort of robot eg. one that could be used for tutoring kids who have difficulties in studying and continually get low marks.

Isn't the current form of teaching by 'drones' part of our education system problem today? But they did when I was at school teach us that some basic things need to be learnt by rote but we do need to be able to think as well.

Watched part of Mona Lisa's Smile last night with Julia Roberts starring. Part of it was about "testing and improving the minds of the students."

My friend Petal does teach kids who have difficulties in studying and continually get low marks for many number of reaons, usually through non-debiltory reasons. More often than not they are from low socio-economic backgrounds, sometimes being generational.

But the "human" input to her students is probably one of the most imortant parts she does teach. She has the nouse to reach out to the individual to make them feel that there is more in life than learning things robotically. And has had very good results over the years.

My niece learnt the piano from a very early age. Her Indo-Chinise mother pushed her to learn it and she won many awards for her Technical Ability. But never took out the top awards as she did not have the "feel" for the music.

But I do love to hear her play. It is a talent I always wished I had the ear for.
