This weekend is the Winter Solstice which is the shortest day and longest night of the year.

Here in Lismore we have the Lismore Lantern Parade on this night. People, artists and school kids make lanterns from tissue paper and wire and light candles inside and then walk through the streets to a big gathering where there is fire performances, fireworks and a massive bon fire. I was in awe the first time I saw it as I had never seen anything like it. It's mesmerizing to see the fire performances and the bon fire. Most of the community comes out and spends the evening together and it's great fun.

While Glastonbury is worshipping the Summer Festival. Odd how a lot of "pagan" ceremonies are still followed to this day.doh

Wow, I didn't realise that we had lantern parades here in Aus.

I seen a few of the many lantern parades that happen regularly in Asia. They are always a celebration of some religious or other significant event there. But I didn't know that we had them here.

They are indeed beautiful and so much work goes into the lanterns.....

Wow Lilee, thanks for sharing, it looks beautiful. I could actually imagine my township doing something like that, it is indeed unique and a lovely bit of inspiration in the pit of winter.

Combi vans and Nimbin are synonimous. It was a culture back then.

Over the last few months, I have taken my old ex-Army Land Rover to a few events. A lot of people have come up to me and the other people there and said how the vehicles have brought back so many memories of what they did way back then.

A lot of the events like the Mid-Winter Lantern Parade mean something to many country towns. A lot are to do with non-Christian celebrations but who does not enjoy a good parade?

The City of Greater Dandenong (Vic) has over 150 diverse cultures and celebrates so many different ones. The Chinenese and Vietnamese New Years are often a month apart. Then they have the Christians of belifs, Lutherans, Dutchies plus Indians of different persuasions, many different African nations celebrating their festivities at different times of the year.
