It's best to stay in the centre as everything is close by, if you want to visit the outskirts then train or hire car would be best

Sure, whatever suits your day. Its such a big city there is no point staying too far out of the centre, you want the cafes and restaurants to be handy to where you stay. The airport is probably only 20 minutes from the city via motorway. Can't recommend a hotel though, just be careful of hotel internet pics as what you see is not always what you get. thumbs up beer

You would be better to find a hotel in the CBD. There are some good ones in the heart of the city all you have to do is search on the web look at findaroom.com.au then pick Melbourne. Look for somewhere close to Flinders street. As you will be close to the train station. But most of the streets in Melbourne you can hop on a tram. You can either hop a tram and go to StKilda to Luna Park.

Or you can catch a train to the danenongs and catch puffing billy. You can also go down to the Yarra river and grab a river cruise or book a cruise and a meal. Or just wander along the Yarra and pick a restaurant along the river. Or head down to china town for a feed.

As for getting to and from the airport you can hitch a ride on a shuttle but and most of them will drop you at your hotel.
Try a cab from the airport it will set you back around $60.00.

Hope this helps.

Asha it is up to you where you stay. But from South Yarra to StKilda is a fair hike. Like I said fine a hotel in the city area where you will be close to transport unless you hire a car.

Yes there are lots of nice shops and eatery's in South Yarra but you are limited to transport.
