Your budget is $50 per week!

Can you feed a family of four , two adults and two children under the age of ten.

Example :

1 loaf of No Name Bread - about $1.00-1.50

1 can of coconut cream $1.00

1 Cup of grated tasty cheese $1.50

Your virtual family needs recipes, variety and to stay healthy!

Can you do it? grin

As long as they're happy to go vego I think I could confused

For example I make around 8 chunky lentil patties from an 80c can of lentils, bit of grated carrot, onion, herbs etc and they're delicious with a salad or some veg conversing

I do tofu patties and pumpkin/feta patties which are also yum and can also be served with salad or hot veg.

Soups can be made for a song, a whole cauliflower for $2 with a bit of onion, garlic and splash of milk makes a huge pot, serve with some of that cheap bread lol, nice lunch.

Big bags of markdown mushrooms, $2, also make a yummo soup.

The choices are endless!

Curries cost next to nothing too, and you can put big chunks of potato, zucchini, carrot, pumpkin, whatever and serve with rice thumbs up

Pasta .. cheap, filling and nutritious if you add good lots of veg, sauce made from canned tomatoes around a buck each.

For sweets, I make a really nice slice out of flour, coconut, sugar, apricots and milk - no eggs!

And apple crumble (apricot if the canned fruit is on sale), can add frozen berries when they are on special and it makes a huge baking dish for around $4.

Lots of choc desserts can be made cheaply too.

The key is to stay away from packaged and prepared foods as much as possible, use your imagination, scour the net for ideas and with a little bit of effort I reckon it could be done.

I eat like this all the time and it's healthy, cheap and full of variety wine

Im with Serene, it is doable, just depends on how much effort you want to put in.

Even with meat you can get a kilo of mince for $8 and that could make up at least two good meals for a family.

You can go further and make your own bread as well, if you dont want to use yeast, there are plenty of things like cornbreads, scones, american biscuits etc you can substitute.

Being frugal doesnt have to be boring or non-nutritious, just involves more effort as you have to start from scratch, not a packet

search things like frugal living, living for less etc

and I am telling you how it is as well, if you want to live frugally it involves work, you cant rely on others to do things for you. Usually relying on someone else means you have to pay for their services, which tends not to be frugal.

I gave you the tools... search for frugal living, or maybe even look for a book called Hard Time Handbook by Keith and Irene Smith.
Many find it too much work to try to live frugally.
I know I dont do as much as I once did as I only have to live for one

The thread is a game to see how inventive people are around food. Like I said it’s a virtual family and the task is “can you feed them on a 50 dollar budget?” What is so hard about the question in the name of bit of fun? confused

There is no way you can feed a family of four on 50 dollars,
not in Brisbane, even if it was mince meat,
still need potatoes, bread and milk and butter for the kids,
can't be done,,

Arborio rice $2.50 per kilo
500 grams of pasta $2.50
500 grams of mince around $6.00
Mixed vegetables 500 grams $5.00
Potato’s 10 kg bag $ 8.00 or less depends on the type.
Small tin of tuna $1.00
Most of the food can be made in block and frozen.

It is not impossible.

Having not been in the situation to have to budget for this for a fair number of years, I cannot truthfully answer this.

But then I really DO ASK A QUESTION "can you feed them on a 50 dollar budget?” Is this for a week or a single meal?

Okay, I went shopping today.

Spring Onions $1.98
Veal Tortellini with a bit of meat included $4.20
Olives $4.21
Semi-dried tomotoes with basil $7.85
Fetta Cheese $2.77

Total of $21.01

Now the Tortelllini I divide into 3 serves. I do not use all of these ingredients for 3 meals but I can work out that I spend about 7.00 and a (very, very small) fraction on a single meal.

So 4 times $7 = $28.

But this is a very simple meal for me. I can afford some extras like fetta cheese, chilli sauce, Brussel Sprouts, cabbage, peppers and many other things that I want with my meal. I will often dice up some real meat to add to this and throw in a few more vegies.

Now many people do not have the luxury to be able to afford to have a budget that would give them the diet they want.

I have a friend who is from Ethopia. He does not give a rat's a..e about the vegies as long as he has his meat to eat.

Simple put, there is a big difference about what you can manage on and what you want.

You are almost there. Yes tuna would be used as one of the ingredients. You can buy small tins of tuna most weeks at Woolworths. grin

Some people don't get humour or fun laugh

Seriously though, going by some of the posts on this thread, I'm glad I live in a country deep in recession where you can still buy a bunch of spring onions for 39c laugh
