our magpies are the top of the food chain when it comes to birds , no natural enemy . Every now and then one will get a bit too big for it's boots . The boys and their mates soon sort that out with a trip to the happy hunting ground for the maggi .

These tough bike riders in lycra where a helmet that would stop a magpie beak. So are those waving cable ties there to attract the magpies?

Just imagine the conversations after doing a ride with those things on.

Arnie "I had 3 maggies try to hit me today."

Bob "That's nothing, I had 7 peck my cable ties."

Chris "Can I order another latte here?"

Don "What's up, Chris. No maggies today."

Ernie "He dipped out today.

Fred "But he did get a little old lady to drop her shopping as he flew by her today. Does that count?"

George "I managed 2 old ladies and 1 old man today."

Harry "Seriously, guys. We are SERIOUS riders here. We did this or that today. We ride seriously."

Ian "Yeah, we have to get real here about our riding."

John "I'm with you. How about we set up a point scoring system of our 'hits' so we can see who had the best ride?"

Kevin "Come on guys, we are serious about our riding.

Larry "Kevin, Kevin, Kevin. We are serious about riding."

Mark "I agree. We are serious. We should be scoring points while we ride."

Neil "Yeah. 1 point for maggies, 2 points for old ladies dropping their shopping, 3 points for old man losing his walking stick, 5 points for kicking a car within reach, and 20 points for hitting a pedestrian."

Oliver "Guys, guys. Remember when the pedestrian got killed when we went throught the red light. We have to be serious here."

Perrence "Okay, 100 points if you kill someone."

the cable ties dont stop the maggies swooping just gives them a target a bit higher than your helmet to hit, or that is my experience.

Then you come up against a maggie that has been teased and they can be vicious. One I had to deal with ignored flags, ties, eyes and didnt bother going for the helmet either. He meant business and went for the side of the face, but not the front of the face, so all you could do was look at him. As he drew blood a few times on me I did something better... I found another way to ride to get where I wanted

I recall hearing about this on TV a few years ago... a legitimate reason why they swoop. I know that after reading this, Lookin'... You will have a certain sympathy for the bird. grin

"The breeding season and associated aggressiveness correlates with the growth of the testes in the male magpie. Their testes become enlarged and testosterone pumps through the male's body. The rest of the year the testes shrink and testosterone levels are lowered. "---Burke's Backyard

These people are aliens and they are not cable ties but antennas. Make sure you stay at least one meter away from them when overtaking… they are very dangerous especially in groups. laugh

yea but , I have seen both birds from a nest take turns a bombing , well after mating with the young birds out of the nest many times . They just plain love it . I have watched them interact with chooks feeding on the same lawn . Magpie swoops at chook and lands , chook feints a fight then every body starts looking for food .

Magpies are extremely smart! I used to live in one place where I had a nest in a large gum tree. we used to feed them so never got attack even during the breading season, but neighbours from either side could not open their back door. laugh
