A news story today is about smacking kids. According to the news story the UN wants to ban violence against kids. thumbs up

Fair call, but is a parent smacking a child in the name of discipline violence against kids?

Should teachers be forced to report any knowledge of smacking of children by parents to aurthorities?

What other methods of discipline have been successful for you if your a parent?

Thoughts?

I used to get the cane end of the feather duster around the back of the legs. ouch wow

I can only remember a few times and usually deserved it. It made me think twice about being naughty as I knew what was coming if I broke the rules.

I raised three sons, mostly on my own so will admit to smacking when they were under 7 or so, but only as a last resort. As they got older I learnt that restricting privileges was probably more effective.

By the time they were teenagers, I think if I had hit them all that time they may have turned around and hit me back. Luckily they had more respect for me than that and never did anything like that. They more often walked out of the house during an argument than raise voices or become violent. Hopefully that was because of my influence to look for other ways rather than show anger as it usually doesn't get you anywhere in my experience.

I do worry that parent's hands are more and more tied when it comes to disciplining their own kids. I don't see a soft smack on the bottom as a last resort of a parent to keep their child under control to be violence towards kids

Those that are violent towards kids don't deserve them either.

Hmm good question, there's a fine line between a tap on the behind and a belt with a heavy hand if frustration kicks in.

I don't think there's any cut and dried answer on this one confused

My son was a bit of a terror in his day and I remember giving him a smack, him laughing and me chasing him down the hallway aiming to land another one but couldn't catch him laugh mumbling laugh

I heard story yesterday from a sister of my sister-in-law who's three year old locked her out of the house and wouldn't open the door for her. She had to climb in the bathroom window to get in. When she asked why he said "I wanted to do something" but she never found out what? dunno

I would have been tempted to give a little smack and time out if that were me. laugh

Yes, I think those of us who have had children understand that it's not a case of manuals and textbooks - each child is different and responds to different forms of discipline.

I've seen parents in public places sit unruly children down and try to reason with them for lengthy periods, when a swift tap on the keister would have done the job more quickly and efficiently laugh
