I am finding it so sad to hear of Ian Thorpe's health issues, his problems with booze and depression? blues

He is just human like all of us but I find it baffling sometimes to see someone who seems to have so much going for him? Young, good looking, wealthy, healthy (or seemed to be) got so much to look forward to ...... but apparently something not quite right? sigh

Has he officially 'come out of the closet' - I'm not sure, but I think he is struggling to deal with that? sad flower

'come out of the closet' has been thought of by a fair few people as "about time."

We are brought up with instilled "ideals" about our lifestyle. Boy meets girl = get married = have kids = live happily ever after.

Life sucks when it doesn't happen the way it is expected of us. We all deal with the "life sucks" moments in our own ways.

I watched the movie "Rush" today. Okay, it is based on the 1976 Grand Prix and around Niki Lauder, supposedly. What commentators of the film have missed is that it also around James Hunt - 1976 Grand Prix Winner.

2 very diffent competive people with the single aim of winning being the #1 priority, when there are so many other things in life so much more important. Well worth watching.

I hope Thorpe wants to get the help he's receiving and manages to sort himself out before something truly bad happens.

You're right Wash, Rush was definitely worth watching. Maybe we should have an ongoing movies thread.

My son-in-law does have a bit of spare time and records a lot of movies for me to watch. And I do have a bit od spare time to watch them.

I also have a lot of time to watch the other movies that are shown during the day (gawd I hate those "funeral plans" during the day).

Yesterday I watched "The Cheyene Social Club."

While I can to some extent sympathize with Thorpe, I would like to see some of the media attention devoted to our heroic young men and women who are returning from active service and dealing with border protection. There is a very high percentage of these who are suffering and far too many feeling so desperate that they see suicide as their only answer. They do have the support of every ex service person in the country and probably the world, but let's get the media and the people behind these people who have laid their lives on the line for you and me.

Yeah, his manager is trying to talk it down saying it was just a case of painkilling meds for a shoulder operation and anti-depressants that caused his episode.
To me it seems he is bordering on mentally ill and I hope for his sake he can pull out of it before it takes hold for an extended period.
I have a family member that has a mental illness and it is so frustrating because you can't talk them out of it until it's too late and they have already made a fool of themselves.
He should do some hard physical work away from the city, that will snap him out of it I reakon.australia

Good point underwaterman - I am sure there is a time bomb of mental health, depression, PTD looming over the horizon for the brave men and women who have been in one or more of the many combat zones recently??

I think one of the hardest things for Ian Thorpe must be that like any other 'famous' person, just about every thing he does is probably noted and commented on, he is instantly recognisable and can't just 'get on with his life'. Think he went to States for a while probably to get out of spotlight??

I believe he made some bad business/property decisions as well which wouldn't have helped. Also being a swimmer, it is pretty much a solo sport unlike say cricket, or football where you are part of a team and have the mateship, support of a group of players??

I am sure everyone wants to see him get whatever help he needs, mental health issues are complex. teddybear teddybear teddybear (for Ian) just in case he happens to be logged on here and reading wave

I feel a bit sorry for Thorpey. It's hard to be in the public eye when everyone feels free to discuss such a personal matter about yourself.

Bit of a catch 22 I think. Does his issues stem from the down side of being Australia's golden boy and that coming to an end or is it a condition he would have been prone to no matter what events took place.

I wish him all the best anyhow, and hope he gets back on top soon.

I guess we should acknowledge that just because you are famous for whatever reason, acting, muso, politician - it doesn't mean you are exempt from getting depression or any other mental health issue? hug
