Western Australia and South Australia are baiting and killing large sharks in the effort to make swimming and surfing more safer, while few of the other states like QLD are using shark nets.

What is your opinion on matter, considering more people die trying to stay healthy per year than from sharks.

Aus is a big tourist market , tourists being eaten while swimming on the same beaches that are being promoted is not a good look .

Actually, they do. When it is known that a lion finds "man" as easy prey, they do kill it.

Back to sharks. A simple fact is that no one on a netted beach has been bitten by a shark unless they have totally ignored the warnings. Many alarms on those very hot days for everyone to get out of the water as sharks can easily go over the top of those nets.

Sydney has a lot of shark nets along its foreshores. Has anyone ever seen one? Are people aware they are out there? NO, they are not.

Do people feel safe in Sydney coastal waters? YES, without really knowing what the State Govt is doing to provide that so they can enjoy those cooling waters. More chance of being caught in a rip and drowing these days than by being gotten by a shark.

I personally dont like non emotional viscous creatures and the world could do without them including the human ones. Saying sharks live in the ocean its their territory dont go swimming, is like saying dont walk on the grass its for snakes! J.M.O.

Bee stings kill more people each year then sharks do,
and also sharks do play a role in the oceans,

one day, there will be a world wide ban on fishing,
hopefully I'll be dead and gone by then,
it will happen, just look at the amount taken,,

So kill everything, all the predators, we would be neck deep in rabbits and mice in a short time,
put your hand in a wasps nest and when you get stung, everyone would say
well that's your own fault,
put your foot in the ocean and a shark bites it off,,and some want to kill all the sharks,,
confused

When the prawn trawlers were going up and down the Gulfs.. within their nets there would be sharks... and of course, these were killed.. I cannot remember what the quota of boats their were, but from the late fifties to the late 70's ( I think) the trawlers were out nightly..

Only if you were connected with fishing, you would know this info.. and then, when the govt. prevented the trawling, the numbers of sharks started to increase..

There were always sharks tho.. little wobeegongs and school sharks, ( which they use for fish in the fish n chip shops) and smaller types..

Now that it has been coming onto 30 odd years that trawling hasn't happened to the extent it used to happen, sharks are very much around...

No one complained before... now there is a huge storm about it..

as usual... with the increase of media outlets.. people learn more and have much more to say...

Ask the N.Z. folks do they have snakes. Then ask who has the mice plagues! So back to the sharks cant stand them myself.

Sharks are at the top of the ocean sea-chain. NSW banned the sale of shark in Fush N Chup shops due to the high mercury content at the top end of the food-chain. Vic and other states do not have that problem, yet.

Ummm, cattle release a lot of methane gases affecting our atmosphere. We should be looking to our OCEANS for more sustainable and eco-friendly food supplies. But don't kill the fish.

Not all shark attacks are in out of the way spots. A 16 year old boy was killed at Ballina in 2008. Surfing right near the heads.

I don't agree with killing them as they are just surviving and following their instincts. We are supposed to be the intelligent creatures who can reason enough to stay out of their way, but as usual our pleasure comes before their life. blues

Eventually the only creatures left will be the ones we want to eat. thumbs down

I think there are around 170 specie wiped out everyday, that would be mostly insects, worms, few non vertebrates and small animals. 99% of these are non threatening to humans but something that is large enough and threatening enough we put up strong objections. Why is this so?laugh
