epirb: that old guy just does not want to vegetate on his bum waiting to die while being nagged constantly by his ever loving wife . Good on him . Plenty of work for young people away from the bright lights in Aus where the moneys good . So much so its still taking our tradesman .
.

Exactly my point. Young blokes here do have trouble getting apprenticeships (as well as lots not willing to work hard) so tradies need to be imported.

My son and 2 nephews were all mature-age - over 21 - apprentices.

oh, and the old guy mentioned is not vegetating at this time - taking up an apprenticeship now because he doesn't make enough money from his sawmill.

I have been trolling (okay, 1/2 heartedly) looking for employment in the field I have undertaken for the last 30 years. Okay, I have been a bit fussy and trying to find something within 1 hour of me.

Go to Employment place this week and my 'supervisor" asks if I have been looking over the last month. I hoestly answer "Yes, nothing suitable."

So she starts trolling local govt sites near me to find something related to my experience.

- Are you experienced as a Cleaner?
- Are you experienced as an Arts Centre Manager?
- Are you experienced as a Property Leasing Manager?
- Are you experienced as a Contracts Manager?

Hey, here is one which looks appropriate for your experience that you could do. Your experience shows that you have managed staff that have undertaken XYZ, ABD and OPQ so you must really be qualified for this position.

In Vic Local Government (and in State and Federal) there are a number levels of employment - depending on responsibility and experience.

Okay, in 2002 when I moved to Victoria, I was on Band 6 PLUS 25%. I stopped work 2 years ago on top Band 7 PLUS bonus (etc) & vehicle expenses (mate is currently as Team Leader on Band 8 LESS vehicle expenses and he says he should have taken my old job).

So the now appropriate job is "Band 5, depending on qualifications."

How hard is it to dumb down an application?

It is about a bit like a driver with qualifications to drive buses, taxis, B_doubles & road trains applying for a job to wash cars and "must have a current drivers license."

Okay, I applied ....... so much looking forward to working in such a worthwhile environment where my skills will be very highly regarded and I will be appropriately recompensed for my many years of experience.

Hi Wash, wave

Seriously, do you really want to work, or are you being forced into it...?

I am really enjoying my Fridays off, and nothing in the world would induce me to go back to full time at this moment...

But I am sorta comfortable in the knowledge that I don't have to work too much longer, and when the time comes, I can reduce to 2 or 3 days a week just to keep my hand in, but if I lose my job, as Federal has cut funding, then I really don't care.. well, that is not true... I will feel very sorry for the team, some who are not yet ready to quit...

Have been thru all of this before, when funding was cut, and whole team lost their employment, but the admin staff stayed on...

I don't know about this time though...

I would welcome some more free time..
and have options...

Meanwhile, I am stuck in HR until May, and then hope to go back to normal HR and Crisis stuff.. sigh

wash2u: This is something I have seen much too often in applications for employment. Ambition greater tan capability.

What experience do you have on seeking such an "every day" employment? In reality, are you just another Monday-to-Friday worker or willing to commit to servicing the industry 7 days per week?

Do you have an references/recommendations? Main reason why I am still waiting for those replies from.....

Wash if you truly don't want to go back to work, opt to do a tafe course, do some accounting courses, there is bloody good money in book keeping or just lodging basic tax returns through an agent ...

I have several qualifications and these have never stopped me getting lesser work ... sometimes the money is better at the bottom with over time that what it is at the top as staff ...

Just change fields I have done it a few times, currently I am studying to do it again, by changing it breathes new fire into an old furnace and can be rewarding when its done and said ...

Old abbott is only going to make things tougher so grab onto something now at school somewhere, run the course and then see where it takes you .. You may even enjoy whatever your new found profession may be ..

as they say in the movies mate ... up UP and AWAY .......super super

For the first 12 months I was at the stage of "I cannot work" and then got to "I need to work" for my mental health. Now my physical health has slowed me down and it is more important for me to do my "bucket list."

Reality wise....I do see that I need to pass on my knowledge and understandings of what I have learnt, the good and the bad.
