My daughter and son in law will be moving back to the mainland from Tasmania. They'll be moving in the Melbourne area due to her husband finishing up university courses to complete his degree. They already know they'll probably need to live about 130 kms out side of Melbourne in order to afford living accommodations....and will be homeschooling their children. Does anyone here know of communities they can recommend for them!?

Thanks in advance!handshake hug

Geelong is town of about 200,000 people 45 mins drive and about one hour by train from the CBD of Melbourne. It has all the major services you need or want, including a hospital and university. Still has affordable housing and rent. Southern suburbs are the place to live, not the north.

Hi Theresa,
The problem with this strategy is finding a job! What degree has he completed? Undergrad/postgrad? It can be very hard to get your "foot in the door" for meaningful employment away from the city and if he has a postgraduate degree, then you may as well say "non-existent".
Long-distance commuting is the other alternative which many do. Places outside of Melbourne like Warburton in the East or Gisborne in the North still harbour "renovator's delights" for $250k.

But the driving and/or train travel is time consuming and expensive.
Regional cities like Ballarat, Bendigo, Geelong are good alternatives, again depending on the type of work he is seeking.

Pakenham is pretty affordable, but it lacks a heart. It is fast becoming a dormitory suburb with new houses going up every five minutes. As usual the population growth outstrips the provision of services. It is about an hour from the CBD, but it has a bad record of cancelled trains, and the Monash Fwy gets chockers after about 6am and after 4pm coming back.
