not sure, think HHDL would make the decision himself, think he mentioned in that interview he leave directions before passing into the Bardo, in english speak, depends if he thinks would be of more benefit than taking another male birth, if any!
In relation to practitioners spirituality male birth is far less complicated than female birth, therefore for the practitioner (e.g. HHDL) male birth has considerable benefits over female, but in the interest of others, HHDL is saying if more beneficial to benefit others then he could consider taking female-rebirth,
Certainly for his own practice, he'd probably managed quite well without the distractions of emotional complications, female monthly, childbirth and motherhood etc, its very good in a worldly sense, but complicates a practitioners practice, the sorts of distractions listed above complicate making study more difficult, Dharma study is very structured, daily prayers, meditation, prayers, meditation, prayers, meditation, prayers, without distractions meditation

HH Karmapa Lama sort of recently escaped out of Tibet and will be filling in for HHDL when Dalai Lama enters the Bardo.
HHDL has number of teachers, most or all taught 13th Dalai Lama, 14th got back into study and carried on with same teachers from where they left off in his last incarnation, continuous unbroken lineage of first Dalai Lama
