I'm probably the last person to answer being a Kiwi.
Here's my 2 cents worth OK?
Firstly apart from the elephant in the room, you don't look Aboriginal and if your mother is/was then it would be easy to track down your ancestral back ground since the 'Feds' have your records.
Secondly, I think it's your right to know your whakapa (ancestors) but if you really want to know then ask the 'feds'
Good luck on your journey and let us know the outcome.
I can speak from personal experience here, I'm part Maori but I look European but I'm not a white apologist either on the Marae (meeting place).

Dad knows nothing or very little . Dads dad side it's over the net it's either 200 or more years since they came here in chains .
But granny I'm a thinking she was stolen
Funny the Feds are saying nothing but the state government has me listed in the hospital as aboriginal.
My last lady friend was aboriginal her family couldn't see it in me . But I was 30 or 39 kilos heavier and they had kids whiter than me .
I just want it known that I have aboriginal blood .

i paid for a birth cert got the birthdate wrong saw my name her mums name and my new daughters name on it . State govt said stiff i said shes trying to find me im trying to find her i got bad luck
State govt said go ask the salvos they were like no birth date maybe not
