Hello folks.....This is a global problem...

All countries have border controls rightly or wrongly to stop people coming to their part of the world illegaly. Some of the aguments used to stop 'outsiders' from moving in range from..The cost on local economies to 'house' them while their situations are being processed, stopping crime, some people say they are taking their jobs..there are many reasons...

People flee their part of the world for numereous reasons too...the oppressive regimes in their country, wanting to be re-united with family memebers, seeking a better standard of living...

I know here in Sarkoland they are repatriating up to 25,000 people a year.

Thing is ,I know lots of people here in this country who have no legal status to work, claim benefits etc..And all they want to do is work, pay their taxes and live a normal life. In the contstruction and restauration industries the number of illegal immigrants is increasing yearly..mainly becasue the indidunious people think that certain jobs are below them...street cleaners, refuge collectors, dish washers in your local restaurant..

And the exploitation that goes along with being an illegal immigrant...no social security, health care....Also not to mention paying to get to their destination of choice. Most off them have to pay in advance to reach where ever it is they want to get to..If they haven't the money to pay the crime lords, they more than often have to turn to crime to pay for that elusive ticket to the promised land. Be it prositution, selling drugs...even muggings.

What I have a problem in getting my head around is why don't goverments let the people stay in their country and legalise them, letting them work..;in the long run it benefits both parties..the economy grows (due to their tax) and crime drops because they are no longer dependant on the crime lords...

Then you throw climate change into the mix. Some countries due to no fault of their own have changed dramatically over the last 20/30 years due to industrialisation of the 'developed' world...And maybe their once arable land isn't so arable any more...

Here in Malta, a tiny crowded rock, we have had enough of them already. They come on boats and are on everyone's nerves now.

They should be send back, as Italy is doing.
I have no dilemmas about it. A few would be OK, but not that much no.

I was at one point and immigrant. When I came to Belgium I didn't know a word of Flemish or French for that matter. (still don't know French). But I was motivated to learn and make sure that I would fit in. I can speak Flemish so well now that I have had it that people that I just meet and that I have spoken to all evening don't realize that I am from Canada. I have worked here for almost 40 years now so I guess I can say I payed my dues.
What annoys me (and I do run into these people in my job) is that they want all the good that Belgium has to offer but will not even try to change their ways. The most recent example was a Turkish lady that I was supposed to teach to drive. Her niece came along for translation purposes. The lady who was mid thirties did not speak a word of Flemish (and I mean not one word not "nee" not "ja") I asked her niece how long she was in Belgium expecting an answer of 3 months or maybe a few weeks. She said rather embarrassed "13 years". After that lesson I told the office that I refuse to give a lesson to anyone who does not speak the language. On the grounds of communication problems. But also out of principle (which I did not mention in the office)
If you want to live in a country learn the language its the least you can do otherwise go back to your miserable existence that you had before.

and I do think it is great here we have a very low crime area and low immigrant area of Belgium. I find it always strange that high immigrant and high crime areas always go hand in hand.

I like the fact that I am Canadian. I am proud of it. Canadians are usually quite nationalistic. And they have a good reputation. Quite often when I start a lesson with a student I tell them that I am Canadian. Interests peak at that moment. It's like hooking a fish on the line. I have there attention and that is what I want and need.

But the tiny rock you live on is made up off....How many different nationalities..Also it's basically a staging post for the illegal immigrants to get to main land Europe...Just how many is a few? Also how would you chose the few?

I thought the subject was “Why illegal emigrants won’t be accepted”, but it looks like the subject is “How good I am at learning a foreign language”.

Sure there are emigrants who don’t learn the language of the country of the residence. But the majority of them does.

Again I’ve read in a newspaper about a man from Middle East, electrician by profession, who couldn’t get job during many years until he changed his name to a Swedish one. A week after that he got a job. I’ve asked my then current husband, a Swede, what he thought about this situation. He refused to comment. So, gentlemen, to learn the language isn’t enough, looks like. And don’t forget, by the way, that you are white. Don’t you think that it’s a positive factor when trying to integrate into another, but also mainly white, culture?

Yes correct about being white and as you said there are other factors. One guy I knew who I would not call a friend (a Belgian who spent all his life in Canada) was not accepted in Belgium. Why?
Well one example. He was sitting at the table in the summer okay but he had no shirt on and he was rather fattish. When sitting at the table he made the comment "Belgen zijn toch varkens" (Belgians are pigs) We all just looked at each other and smiled. There was only one pig at that table. He couldn't hack it in Belgium and went back to Canada.
