Oh my, oh dear....I was listening to online radio and just heard a Christmas carol (walking in a winter wonderland - no less).....I am sooooooooo irritated now!! I am a scrooge. I HATE Christmas and it has started.....32 days away

In The Netherlands we are in the midst of celebrating Sinterklaas and Schwart Piets...I should not (I repeat) should not have to endure both.....very mad

(Sorry, but just another mindless thread from me)

So, who here is a Christmas person, get's all warm and sweet and full of good cheer and who just gets grumpy like me?

christmas sad christmas sad

My best Christmas ever, I left Canada about a week before Christmas with my backpack, travelled throughout Italy and returned about Jan 7. I didn't have to deal with mall madness, all commercials (ads) being made into hokey christmas songs and the general commercial madness of xmas. It was probably the same in Italy but I don't speak Italian and I didn't go shopping, so it didn't matter...haha.

In some respects I prefer the Italian Christmas.
It is treated very seriously as a religious festival, so none of the hipe and trivial crap that comes from the marketing men.

Obviously there is a commercial aspect to it, but it's taken far more seriously.

Christmas day is always quite sombre, with much church going and family festivities.

New Year.... now thats when the party starts !! cheering cheering

I was in Roma for Christmas. I was boarding in a convent run by German nuns (because I do speak a bit of German - long story as to why I was in a convent, but never mind). The nuns brought me wine every night and ended up moving me to a room with a balcony because I smoked at the time and they couldn't stand the smell of my smoke wafting through the convent. But, for Christmas I walked over to St. Peter's Cathedral. It was packed and I watched the festivities. Quite cool actually. A bit over my head, but cool. Afterwards walked in the streets and met an Italian man who took me on a walking tour. It was lovely. New Year's eve that year was in Firenze...a mad evening spent with a group of other tourists who were travelling and wondered into the same establishment I was at. Left there and spent a few days in Milano. Trekked to the top of the Il Duomo and heard Christmas carols wafting up from the street. That was nice as it was not in my face!!! Just sort of mellow. Nice it was.

Sounds like you had a wonderful trip.

If you ever fancy doing it again, let me know and we can meet up, maybe show you my little part of Italy.... it's lovely.... well the whole country is, and we have 3 convents here that you can stay at.... many travellers do.

Looking forward to Xmas again this year and am glad I am out of the hype.

Ghost, we got it covered. I can take care of the sabotage in The Netherlands, Canada (going home for the holiday) and West Africa (if I get my mom on board)..You've got Malta right? I have this whole plan for world conspiratorial acts (but it is secret - can't share it with everyone)

Oh my, I think I might have had too much coffee!

blues

Ok, I will share, it involves handing out ex-lax to anyone who is not 'with us', hiding all the TP and running away really quickly...We come back after 3 hours and the world is ours...

I can't find the maniacal devious crazed person emoticon.

Ok, I'm off for now as I think I have lost my mind....wave

He he, well I feel indifferent - not affected by Christmas either way. I hope to be babysitting one of my 4-legged kids or grandkids over Xmas, that would be the most beautiful and meaningful thing for me to do.

I don’t get warm and full of good cheer because of Christmas, but there’s no grumpiness either.

I’m even worst that that – I’m a heretic. And I plan to sleep throughout Christmas time…

Christmas commercials don’t irritate me as I don’t watch TV. Pre-Christmas hysterical gift purchasing doesn’t affect me as I never buy Christmas gifts. And it’s rather pleasant with all light garlands around as it’s dark already at 4 pm here…

My beloved holiday is New Year night… then I will celebrate!
