Due to the colapse of the economy last week in UAE, Sheik Al Maktoum of Dubai said this could have massive rebounding effects world wide........ apparently Netherlands is wanting to deport all their foreigners back to their home countries ........ Denmark is next, and Sweden says it will follow if this proves sucessful.... however, only if the home countries pay at least half the costs of this excercise.

Bulgaria, Romania, Albania, Croatia and Turkey are wanting all their exiled citizens back and are willing to pay their fares if they voluntarily apply for re-patriation.

Africa refused to comment other than saying they will wait till after the 2010 Soccer to make their decision as there is not enough space, food, or jobs, at the moment.

There would be plenty of food, and there certainly is space, if the various African govts actually made their people's needs, a real concern. Look at what happens even when foreign food aid is attempted. From what I have gleened over the years, it is the voluntary organisations that tend to set up there, and help change lives by empowering them with tools and skills. I could go on, but will stop here.sad flower

Ireland is talking about doing the same. There's actually an EU fund to cover half the costs. Apparently it's for Non EU nationals.

Unfortunately on many occasions, food, clothes and medicine sent in aid of populations in need are often hijacked by unscrupolous persons for their own needs. These might be for selling on the black market, or else for use of a faction if the country in question is undergoing a civil war.

The latter case happened in Somalia in 1993 for example, which led to the American intervention by US Army Rangers and Delta Force troops in Mogadishu. Some here might have watched the movie, but I suggest you also read the book as it goes into much greater depth into the political and social situation there, and why there is little, if any hope of finding a peaceful solution. It's nearly 2010 and the situation down there is hardly any better.

This isn't a situation that happens only in Africa though. There were plenty of cases (such as documented on TG2 Dossier for Italian viewers) where humanitarian aid destined for Kosovo was diverted by Albanian smugglers.

Once a residence permit expires, if you're a foreign national staying in any country, it's the host country's legal right to deport you unless your residence permit is extended.

No breach of human rights there, sorry.

I agree with you, but you are obviously talking about the legal immigrants. Just imagine the havoc that the illegal ones are causing, and Governments are asked to accept them and give them legal status.

What are these people in Government doing instead of loading them on a cheap ship and sending them back? or maybe a cheap Ryanair flight would do the trick. But Ryanair only flies to civilised countries I guess!!

Are the immigrants on CS all legal or are there some illegal ones among us? No surely not, otherwise they would be lurking and hiding away from publicity.

Hi there, nice to meet a fellow Maltese here. Kif int? :)

Yes I was talking about legal immigrants, illegal ones are by definition, er, illegal laugh

In the case of EU citizens, they have a right to live in another EU country so long as they have the means to sustain themselves, in other words, they won't apply for non-contributory state benefits from their host country.

That means you must have a job, or else in receipt of a pension from your original country. If you satisfy one of these 2 conditions, residence permits are no problem for an EU citizen.

I'm not sure about the conditions of workers working on a set time contract. My assumption is that if your contract is not renewed upon expiry, your host nation can ask you to go back to your original country if you do not find new employment within a set period of time.

EU citizens dont need resident permits in another EU country

If the host nation is another EU country then you can stay there as long as you want. Your residence is not dependant on any work contract.

I'm not sure you are correct on this one. I work in my country's social security department, and whenever a foreigner applies for a benefit, whether EU citizen or not, a residence permit is always requested. Mind you, I don't know the law's wording per se, just going by my department's normal procedures.

wulfen: Sorry I mistook your earlier post to mean that you weren't an EU citizen.

I'm not sure as to the exact wording of the law in the case of EU citizens, but in my department we do ask for a residence permit whether the person in question is an EU citizen or not!

That's against European law...

The 15 EU members (before expansion) have the right to travel and work freely in each others countries without the need for a work permit of any description....(I think the law came into effect through out in Nov. 2002)

As for Malta...

I wasn't referring to a work permit, but a residence permit which is issued by the ministry of foreign affairs.

If someone from the Eu with a valid passport applied for a res. permit (assuming they had a job lined up)...The procedure is fairly straight foward or is it a paper chase???
