illu_66: I read, read and read. If I don't have a book, I'm reading cereal packets.... I NEED books - I devour them...

I LOVE reading.

I would suggest:
Jonathan Livingston Seagull by Richard Bach, an inspiring book.
The Boy in the Striped Pajamas - so very simply written, but hard hitting!
For something lighter, try The Discworld Novels by Terry Pratchett. 'The Colour of Magic' is the first. They are satirical fantasy stories - laughing at both the typical fantasy genre (Lord of the Rings etc) and intertwining it with the real world events (think of medieval people who invent cinema or rock music...). VERY funny.
Finally - my favourite book of all time. It MAY be for kids but.... Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. There is a version called the Annotated Alice. You get the two stories, but there are side notes that explain much about the 'meanings' and hidden 'in jokes'. Fascinating!

I’ve read Jonathan Livingston and Alice, yes these books make an impression, you won’t forget them that easy.

And thank you for the advice – looks like my “To read next” list is growing, appreciate it.

Tbh I rarely read any period books or classics now though I have done them all, Thomas Hardy, Lewis Carroll etc. Now my shelf consists of

Sue Grafton, Martina Cole, Lynda la Plante, Janet Evanovich, Jeffery Deaver and many more.

I collect sets of books unless they are one off real life autobiographies, not usually by famous people.

With an interest in psychology and forensics I'd say that my shelf reflects this.

As for women writers being 'biddyish', most of my crime writers are female and while over the course of their 'lifetime' they may fall in love or have liasons they are not usually the gushy romantic type of writings but an addition to the story.

Whatever you read enjoy, the time is ME time and well deserved.
