here in Sarkoland the custom is to give kiss on the cheeks to the person you're being introduced to( different regions it's either2,3 or 4)..follow or accompanied by a firm handshake...

I don't do the kissing on the cheeks bit (personal..not homophobic stuff..I just don't)..

What about your part of the world.....

A kiss on both cheeks. The men, unless they are family, generally shake hands or do the manly bear hug thing with other men. rolling on the floor laughing

i'm happier with the one kiss max-being english.

my husband's family have trained me to kiss twice, one on each cheek.

except for the half lebanese portion of the family, who confuse me by going for the 3rd kiss..

its all ok till the old lady who really needs a shave, and has a grip of iron comes along,,,uh oh barf

Swizzyland it`s 3 kisses, for friends, first on their left, then right, then left again.... for Hello`s and Goodbye`s! BUT the "kiss" is just a smackaroo sound, not actually touching their skin, thank goodness. Otherwise its a not too firm handshake...... from little kids to old folk.

Since the Swine flu thing I notice not too many "kisses" taking place.....grin

As I lived in several countries I can describe the complexity of the situation...being from Slovenia,I think we don t kiss or it s very rare....in Serbia it s 3 kisses with the hug..in Croatia..hmmm I still don t know the protocol...I kiss close friends (two kisses max),but when introduced you don t kiss.I remeber getting into panic when living in Paris..4 kisses for the girls and when you go to the party you have to kiss everyone.....hard work....boys just shake hands...in Greece they mostly hug....As for UK, there I never know what to do....

In Italy you just shake hands when you meet someone new, 2 kisses one each cheek for family and friends if you haven't seen them in awhile and.... if they like you a lot, they 'fix' you; brush invisible lint, fix your collar, compliment your clothes and take your arm for a stroll down the street to of course get a nice caffe' and a gab.

People shake hands here when they are introduced to each other for the first time, even women. After that when you meet next time you are kind of acquaintances and don’t have to shake hands anymore.
handshake

I find handshakes unhygienical… (Do you really want physical contact with strangers?) But there’s Swedish custom, and I’ve never experienced people of other ethnicities to do that, to offer a flaccid hand, it feels as squeezing a bit of paste, so unpleasant. I’ve asked a Swedish acquaintance why, haven’t got any answer. Well… I’ve got an answer that summarized to “I don’t know”. So I also don’t know why people do that. If it’s their way to show something, then message is lost for me…
dunno

And of course, you hug and kiss people you are close to (when both sides want that).

hug

venere08: I know what you mean, Mike.

When I first went back to Italy in '75, I was like a fish out of water. I had grown up in Aussie Land, while laid back, still Anglo-Saxon society. Apart from men slapping each other's back if they meet their long lost mate, there's not much touching.
