In response to:
Unicef say only TWO countries have not ratified the Convention on the Rights of the Child, which prohibits the use of soldiers younger than 15 ... These being the United States and Somalia.

It's a scam.

The US ratified that convention on Feb. 16, 1995.

And Somalia ratified it on May 9, 2002.

The problem with such things is seldom that countries don't ratify a treaty. The problem is that the people don't necessarily respect the treaty and the government either won't or can't enforce it.

Somalia is just a handy country to blame fictive piracy upon.

I'm not saying there aren't pirates there.
Certainly there are.

But they prey on small pleasure crafts and yachts etc.

The idea that pirates from a speedboat could somehow board a large vessel that is underway at sea is ridiculous.

Even navy seals couldn't do it.

I'll believe it when I see a video of it happening.

Until then I consider it to be just one more scam to push for a global police force.

Well Ray, this is from "The Global Edition of the New York Times" dated Tuesday June 15th 2010.

And it is according to Unicef - Unicef clearly states that fact.

Somali human rights groups and United Nations officials say the government, which relies on assistance from the West to survive, is fielding hundres of children on the front lines.

Child soldiers are deployed across the globe, but the United Nations says the government here (Somalia) is among the most perisistent violators of sending children into war.

Officials also revealed that the U.S. government was helping pay their soldiers, an arrangement U.S. officials confirmed.

Barack Obama, when the issue was raised during his campaign for president, did not disagree. "It is embarrassing to find ourselves in the company of Somalia, a lawless land" he said.

Fact is: U.S. tax money is paying for guns and wages to children under 15.

Worse is the fact that they actually did sign it, yet have no scruples or respect for what they signed.

Seems like Big America is going the same direction the worst of 3rd world countries go ......? Sign with one hand, and put money under the counter with the other....?

...Sort of how the old North American Indians described them way back in the wild west days .... "Two Faced"

Well Phoenix look again.

Smoky's point was that neither the US nor Somalia have signed the treaty.

But in fact, Both the US and Somalia HAVE signed the treaty.

And, despite your insistance to the contrary, I have no intention of blaming Israel for a situation that doesn't even exist.

Israel has plenty of blame for situations that do exist.
But this thread is not about those.

It is yourself Phoenix that seems to be trying to make this thread relate to Israel's crimes.

Nor has Smoky mentioned any "exploitation not some theory KIDS BEING EXPLOITED"

What she mentioned was the claim that the US and Somalia have not signed the treaty. And that claim is simply false. Based on somebody's false claim on the internet no doubt.

So thanks so much for your unrequested advice.
As for Israel if you don't like what I post, feel free to speak up in the threads where I post and don't try to accuse me on totally unrelated threads.

As far as I know Somalia doesn't even have a real army for kids to be involved in. They have a lot of gangs, and I don't think a treaty will do much to affect what they do.

As I stated in the post that you don't even seem to have read before ranting about, the problem is not getting the country to sign a treaty (they have already signed it ) the problem is getting the people to abide by the treaty.

Somalia hardly has a government at all.
It's in a state of anarchy.

So the treaty, although already signed, doesn't have much effect on what happens.

From the wikipedia article conrad posted the link to.

The US has signed and ratified both of the optional protocols to the Convention.

Two optional protocols were adopted by the UN General Assembly on 25 May 2000. The Optional Protocol on the Involvement of Children in Armed Conflict requires governments to ensure that children under the age of eighteen are not recruited compulsorily into their armed forces, and calls on governments to do everything feasible to ensure that members of their armed forces who are under eighteen years of age do not take part in hostilities. This protocol entered into force on 12 July 2002; as of May 2009, 128 states are party to the protocol and another 28 states have signed but not yet ratified it.

So that takes care of the US.

They have both signed and ratified the prohibition to draft kids.

As for Somalia.
It's their problem.
Unless you want global government and global police.

And that's coming. Whether we really want it or not.

U.S. delaying millions in aid to Somalia, U.N. says

GAALKACYO, Somalia (CNN) -- The U.S. government is delaying "tens of millions" of dollars in crucial humanitarian aid over concerns that the money is being diverted to a notorious militant group, a senior U.N. official said.

The U.S. government, concerned about the challenges in delivering assistance in a country wracked by civil war, s.............

quote]

Smoky`s point was/is: The U.S. is using it`s taxpayers money to pay salaries to children as young as 7 to act as soldiers in Somalia. And the people of America do nothing.

The fact that they DID sign makes it even worse.

Yes, they are sending "aid money" .... without bothering where or how it is used.

I will quote another article, in the same paper .....

"Remaking Africa" De-recognizing failed African states will force their rulers to adopt reforms to win domestic support.
blah blah blah .... etc ...."And most of these nations, broke from their own thievery, are now unable to provide their citzens with basic services like security, roads, hospkitas and schools. What can be done?

"The first and most urgent task is that the donor countries that keep these nations afloat should cease sheltering African elites from accountability. To do so, the international community must move swiftly to de-recognise the worst performing African states, forcing their rulers to search for support and legitimacy at home."

"Donor countries would tell these rulers - all nightmares to much of their populations - that they no longer recognize them as sovereign states. Instead they would agree to recognize only African states that provide their citizens with a minimum of safety and basic rights".

......Some of the repressive leaders, deprived of their sovereign tools of domination and the international aid that underwrites their regimes, mught soon find themselves overthrown.
