Anne of green gables, made a lasting impression on me as a child,I liked the characters, especially her adopted father farmer, who rarely spoke but was so kind hearted-probably had something to do with my choice of husband lol

And 'the darling buds of may'Another farmer,I loved the wonderful huge happy family depicted,I wanted a life like that.

Hi Wedward,

I cannot accurately recall the title, and think I still have the book somewhere in storage, but was called something like 'Women at War' from the mid-80's. It was basically a collection of first-hand accounts of how women's letters and recollections from WWII.

It covered families from all nations and clearly showed how one's spirit survived through all types of tragedies, how they could always see the humorous side and most importantly of all, that wars only cause pain and suffering and showed never be allowed... sigh

I also read Bill Bryson's 'Notes from a Small Island' and done a review of it when I worked in a book store and he is extremely good, but yet to read more from him, though I like your 'Short History of Everything' Charlie.

I would also recommend 'McCarthy's Bar: A Journey of Discovery In Ireland' as its pretty funny..

Enjoy your Sunday evening everyone.. wine
