What is it in a book that is most appealing to you?

Is it the story, the language used by the author or something else?

Which is your favorite book and why?

I love to read and I guess by sharing thoughts about books that has been read, we can advice one antother about titles, we may miss
if we do not hear about them.

Right now I would have to answer Rumi and Hajjar.. their poetry strikes a chord with my inner being for some reason.. teh fact that they wrote so many centuries ago makes it even more remarkable as in all honesty few modern writers can be said to stir one's soul let alone shake you into rethinking your whole life values..

I agree, it is amazing how words, that do not say much individually, put together in a certain fashion are striking. Like
you I have read already (a shame) almost forgotten authors from centuries back, more or less startled I have found they express
the same emotions, the same experiences as of today, but manage to enlighten this so unusually fragile but clear.

I would enjoy to read a few lines from mentioned poetry, that is if you have the time and want to share.wine

After reading ”Cold five thousand” of James Ellroy I couldn’t read anything for some while – a very special, as they call it “telegraphic” language. Make an impression.

Strugatsky brothers were the love from the first sight and still remain absolute gods in the matter of questioning authorities and majorities, though they don’t do well in translation.

Ed McBain is a distinguished unit.

Reading right now “High sociaty” of Ben Elton – I like black humor per se and it is good for a hospital.

But give me an anecdote any time – brevity indeed.

"As a teenager, he was wonderstruck by the songs and legends of what he called Northernness, the ancient literature of Scandinavia preserved in the Icelandic sagas."

The words I like to read are all pre-1960's when authors still knew how to create a scene in the written word.

Egdar Rice Burroughs "Tarzan of the Apes" series is classic in this regard.

Is it not just creepy when that special book sneaks up on you and once finished, you feel there will be no one as good ever after. Like a broken marriage!!!!! You thought were great.laugh

I have one, (no not marriage!!!) I cherish like that, right now I
can not proceed with my great pleasure, thinking I am stuck.
Because of that special book.
Okay, the author is D. H. Lawrence, and the title "Women in Love". I know what you are thinking, and I thought so too when I bought it in a second hand store--50cent. I took a little sneakpeak in the middle of it--his language hit me like lightning. It is a masterpiece of insight in emotions, when emotions really are ruined for life when it comes to love and commitments.

What do you think of the words pre-1890? Emile Zola, "Therese Raquin." As an example??

Shamefully admitting, I never really got caught in the Icelandic sagas. I started to read the heavy russians when I was about 16 y/o
and between the horseback rides lessons. I got very fond of human relations and the relation between deeds and consequences.

We all know the word priorities with time, but now perhaps I can look into vulcano people sagas, Thanks

C.S. Lewis was a devout Atheist.

He wrote on Christianity. Not the stuff you find in Churches.

Some of his best-sellers are The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (made into a movie).

Mere Christianity ...... and .... The Great Divorce.

The Screwtape Letters ...(a demon dialogue..very funny)

The Problem of Pain.....

Screwtape proposes a Toast......(more demon dialogue stuff)

The Chronicles of Narnia....

......................

Absolute Classics! I just keep re-reading them. Some of his works are a bit of science-fiction, and quite believable, and enjoyable, if you have a spiritual side and a brain that enjoys fantasy.
