mariola: This is happening here in my village.

I am a non smoker but enjoy the atmosphere of the local bars.

The old men come in during the week for a drink, play dominos or cards, and smoke. Younger people, mostly musicians of the village band, use the bars at weekends. Not all but a lot smoke. In 2011 the law changes, no smoking in all public places. These quiet bars that struggle through the week with few customers will lose that weekend custom which I am sure gets them from one fiesta to the next financially.

Already in the Twelve years I have lived here I have seen 3 bars close due to lack of business. I now fear that 2 more will close shortly, leaving one souless bar Restaurant !

My neighbour’s mother died a week ago, lung cancer, 73 year old, never smoked. The issue is that her daughter, my neighbour, visited her mother during 3 weeks and saw, as she expressed it, young women, slightly more than 40, dying of diseases caused by smoking as COPD. And she now is worrying for herself as she works among smokers and it’s known that passive smoking is also damaging.

I smoked myself, though, as I didn’t like the smell, especially when it gets stale, I always tried to get out – no one has to endure my grief together with me, or have they?

dunno

This has been the experience here in Portugal, the small village bars have all but gone and with them the financial support for whole families, without arguing the wrongs and rights of smoking or passive smoking, people today are extremely aware of these issues even in a small village, and yet some well paid, faceless beaurocrat supported by the anto smoking lobby none of whom live in these villages let alone care about people trying to make a living, enact blanket legislation without allowance for the poor.

Well… I do understand that smoking ban isn’t good for small restaurants, especially in country-side there they have been centres for the local social life. But I think if it was so important for the local people they would claim their rights and traditions back. Why don’t they do so? Why do they allow someone else decide about their life style?

I doubt that everybody in these places were smokers. Have non-smokers also quit visiting the local restaurants? Or is it something else? My impression is that here in Sweden young people just leave country-side as there’s no job. Perhaps it’s one of the reasons why places of former social gathering become empty. Just my guess.

It is highly dangerous to stand near a person who smokes, as the fumes in their clothing and hair can cause cancer to innocent non-smokers.

The same can be said for motorised transport ... you dont have to drive, you can be hit and injured or killed by an auto ....!

You can imbibe food prepared with chemicals in it and your body will automatically expell any toxins, leaving you in excellent physical health.

You actually don`t even have to do any excercise, just stroll to your auto, drive to wherever you want to go .. and then sit in a comfortable chair all day, then go home, watch TV, and go to bed.

The body is an automatic machine. Just keep it away from cigarette smoke! .. and you will live a long and healthy life.

Tulefel: But why wouldn’t the majority get their right (privilege? tradition?) back? Given, as you’ve pointed on, Switzerland is independent and doesn’t have to follow stupid EU regulations? Especially if sons inherit fathers’ smoking habits. They are in a position to defend their traditional life style in their own country, aren’t they? Surprising that they allowed the change that no one wanted in the first place.
You obviously do not follow international politics, so rather say nothing, and remain placid, and let us assume you are the same intelligent person who makes other highly amusing and sometimes intelligent remarks.

My Old Man smoked until sometime in 1977.
Pushes 93 in next May!

It's what your Immune System does with the damaged Cells, not primarily the Damaged Cell itself!

Well, I like to believe what some research doctors say .. and I have read/heard that the human body normaly produces cancer and other damaged cells daily ...... and in a normal healthy state, with good nutrition, it also expells these damaged cells.

That it is only with under-nutrition that the body becomes incapable of self-cleaning itself.

Of course, taking immune suppressing drugs also inhibits this ability of expelling the damaged cells, as the body no longer recognises them..... the same for anti-biotics in the blood stream.

But all that is Hum-Bug as we all know that it is ONLY cigarette smoke that causes cancer!

Just heard of someone died of Lungcancer at 49,never smoked a day in their lives¨.
Was told recently that you didn't need to have smoked to die of Lungcancer!
Enough other, even natural Substances around to give you a precondition!
And if your Body can't cope with it,Cancer develops!
In a sound Immunesystem the damaged Cells will be prevented from multiplying.dunno

THE MASTER HAS SPOKEN.

End of discussion.

Unless, of course, anyone knows MORE about the dire consequences of other LESS toxic substances ... like ..

well ....

...what you get when you breath too many car fumes in the streets....
the smug that comes out of factory chimneys...
the stuff that makes fish die in rivers and lakes...
makes trees die, prevents plants from being fertile...
keeps your food fresh for six months without refrigeration...
prevents mould forming on your bread...
makes "fresh" milk go rotten instead of sour...
makes feed-lot animals go insane...

... What makes a rat prefer to eat the cardboard box instead of the cereal inside that you give the kids to eat for breakfast...?....

..Why one of the most rampaging infections in Humans these days is Fungal Growths......?

All makes for good interesting discussions...huh?

Well… if you need to be let, then I let you to believe in whatever you want, not my concern. Which is also true about your assumptions – whatever they may be it’s not my grief to supervise their sustainability.

Errrm?, whatever happened to "live and let live", after 35 years of travelling and living in various countries I look back on some very strange, (to me) habits and customs, nonetheless, I also look back on some great people, shared experiences and a heck of a lot of laughter, usually at my expense as I tried to fit into the community and didn't quite get it right.

There's a heck of a lot out there that will kill you but worrying about it will probably kill you more quickly, when your time on Earth is up, it is up and no amount of worrying will change that.

Actually, we are in more danger from the clothes we wear than smoking,(yes really!) the chemicals that go into processing fibres are absorbed by the skin. There are 82 pesticides in the average apple and so on.
Anyway, I now need a cigarette and a glass of wine .....

Ja, no hysterics for the producers, in China, of lead cheap jewellery.

All the eWaste is sent there, for them to melt down and re-cycle, and re-imported, and sold to unsuspecting customers......... Buyer Beware?
