My Country
by
Dorothea Mackellar
(1885 - 1968)

The love of field and coppice,
Of green and shaded lanes.
Of ordered woods and gardens
Is running in your veins,
Strong love of grey-blue distance
Brown streams and soft dim skies
I know but cannot share it,
My love is otherwise.

I love a sunburnt country,
A land of sweeping plains,
Of ragged mountain ranges,
Of droughts and flooding rains.
I love her far horizons,
I love her jewel-sea,
Her beauty and her terror -
The wide brown land for me!

A stark white ring-barked forest
All tragic to the moon,
The sapphire-misted mountains,
The hot gold hush of noon.
Green tangle of the brushes,
Where lithe lianas coil,
And orchids deck the tree-tops
And ferns the warm dark soil.

Core of my heart, my country!
Her pitiless blue sky,
When sick at heart, around us,
We see the cattle die-
But then the grey clouds gather,
And we can bless again
The drumming of an army,
The steady, soaking rain.

Core of my heart, my country!
Land of the Rainbow Gold,
For flood and fire and famine,
She pays us back threefold-
Over the thirsty paddocks,
Watch, after many days,
The filmy veil of greenness
That thickens as we gaze.

An opal-hearted country,
A wilful, lavish land-
All you who have not loved her,
You will not understand-
Though earth holds many splendours,
Wherever I may die,
I know to what brown country
My homing thoughts will fly.

Chrisys: Well, the Kings Cross area of Sydney is full of "Pro's" and the whole place was built by Cons, (convicts).

Except for South Australia.cool

"South Australia

The British province of South Australia was established in 1836, and in 1842 it became a crown colony. South Australia was never a British convict colony, although a number of ex-convicts settled there from other colonies. Around 38,000 immigrants had arrived and settled in the area by 1850"

But Brits still seem to think it's OK to dump criminals in Australia.***.... For ex, Thompson and Venables, who murdered toddler James Bulger, were supposedly given new identities and shipped to Oz. I think one of them might have recently come to the attention of British authorities again, though possibly back on home soil for now...Until his next makeover roll eyes

*** goodness knows we have enough of our own colourful murderers, especially SA!!uh oh

CuspofMagic: Australia is arguably one of the last places left to get it right... the parliament at the moment is hung - the people want change , real change not just piecemeal and cake... hopefully the pollys have run out of false carrots

Why do you want change? What could be wrong on the island full with sun and surrounded by ocean?

rockstar68: Since you've gone down that path Australia was great until the Europeans arrived.

An Englishman once said.

"France is the most inviting country on Earth.
Too bad about all the French people living there."

That seems a little extreme.
Public flogging would have been good enough.

They're a morbid lot.
On my first day in Perth someone asked me,
"did you just come here to die"?

Australia is the most wonderfull continent in the World.

i have been there now 8 times and each time i have to go back home it breaks my heart.

I have never meet so many friendly People.... such wonderfull country sites.....and never ever found a place before wich i would call Heaven.

I have friends of 30 Years living there......and each time i go i have more new friends, something wich seems natural in Australia....shame is not like that over here.

I m counting the days already for my next visit over there..... and i know it sounds ever so morbid......... but if i die one Day i hope it will be there.......i wasnt able to live and work there when i was alive.. so mabye i can stay when i m dead....
