There is a girl who works at the bakery on my street. Probably in her 20's. Pretty girl. She never speaks, never cracks a smile, touches the bread with her hands after touching the money. Takes peoples hot food out of the oven with her hands and then scowls and rubs her burned hand in pain. I just don't get it. She acts like this with all the customers.

Why on earth does she work there? Why not get employment in which you do not have to deal with so many people each day?

Sorry, but had to winge about this, get it off my chest.....mumbling

It could be anything. She may have a horrible home life, she may resent being in a job that does not pay much, she may be lacking in ambitions, she may have failed exams and that is all she can work at. Have you ever smiled and her and wished her a good morning?

Perhaps, but knowing Imma as I do I´m convinced she would always smile and say good morning to this rude young woman.

Even if someone has personal problems it´s no excuse for poor food hygiene, or not smiling once in a while.

I don´t understand it either Imma, and I´m surprised she still has a job. Customer service is so important and I get annoyed when it isn´t delivered.

I´m sure like me, you go into classes some days feeling awful, but we have to smile and laugh with our students otherwise, well in my case teaching adults, they won´t come back and will find their English lessons elsewhere.

Dear Jan, you're a luv....thank you. Dear Wow Factor, I really do smile at this lady, not that I am 'trying', but I truly think that smiles are contagious and I would love to see her smile. I was thinking today that maybe it is a family business and she is angry that she has to follow in the footsteps. Also, you can't fire a daughter for bad customer service. It is the only thing that makes sense. I know this is nothing really that interesting to talk about on the forums, but it really troubles me to see someone so obviously miserable. There are other less people oriented jobs.

Bye for now. Have a lovely evening folks. Bye Jan, miss chatting with you on the forums. hug

It is interesting Imma. I teach business English mostly so for me it certainly is as it´s a fundamental part of my lessons. For others too I´m sure as we have to deal with this everyday whether shopping, having a coffee, visiting the bank, travelling by bus, train taxi etc, or dining out in a restaurant amongst many other situations.

Smiles are contagious Imma. Keep smiling. hug

I am sorry Imma if I may have been flippant in my answer to you. Thank you JAN-is for pointing out that Imma is the type of person who is sensitive to this sort of situation.

Unfortunately there are simply miserable people in this world. Shop staff here in the UK only get minimal wage or perhaps a couple of dollars above - talking about mundane jobs - not mid to high end retail salaries. Shop staff would find a mundane job becomes so much better if they cheered-up a bit, but of course it is just a 9 to 6 job for them. Just a means to keep a roof over their head and food on the table.

Thanks Wow, no worries. Well, I won't give up yet. I pass by the bakery every day. I will get her to smile yet...

I think it is great that you genuinely care. You seem to have a very kind heart which is rare, not because people don't have kind hearts but because you have posted it on this forum. I hope you are the one to brighten her day, as it will certainly brighten your day if you do so. All the very best Imma.
