josingleinspain: Thanx again Smoky I still can not understand how they can even think you can loose your citizenship where 4 generations was born?????? The fact is if you have no understanding about South Africa you will never get it. I know for sure the frustration of going back there and trying to get anybody that you can speak to to make sense of this insanity....But hey I am gonna be at my beloved daughter and will see my son again that I have not seen in a very long, long time. Happy days. Again thatx to all for the hel and advice.
You are welcome, that`s what we`re here for ..... panic and advice!
Good luck when you`re over there. Oh and another tip .... if you eat in a restaurant, don`t let the waiters not return your change when you pay ... they`re great on that ... they take their gratuities for granted and happily help themselves to your change especially if in the process of changing shifts. Watch them. And only tip maximum 10% for GOOD service. Or else you perpetuate their horrible behaviour.

This is a terrible predicament for you. Have you no high-up contacts in SA or locally? You should see a lawyer who specialises in matters of immigration etc. There is certainly a way out but only a lawyer would know it or perhaps some diplomat from SA.

Keep visiting the embassy, make them understand that you will not take this lying down.

If I think of anything useful I'll write here later.

hey Darl Ticktock .... you have to be a South African to know how South Africa works! It is not a normal country like most people are used to here. There are no "high-ups" in government unless they are your family.

No, Josi`s problem is already solved. She gets a temporary passport from her embassy in Spain, and she applies for her new one whenever she wants to. She just happened to bump a day in SA when she phoned, when everyone was in dumb-mode. There are lots of dumb-mode days in SA .... they call it, quite proudly too.... "African Time". Usually you just sit out on the pavement and wait for the day to become another day and hope for the best.

Living in a european country is the best option for anyone - because the staff in overseas embassies are still functioning as employable people.

Thanx for all the tips I was told I have to get it sorted in S.A. as they will not issue a full passport till I apply to be south African citizen again. I have to now beg become part of my birthland again cos I left without asking to keep being a south african. No other country in the world can think up such bullsh.t. Thanx Mr. Mandela he made that clever plan all by himself........

Just read through the posts. This is really unbelievable what happened to you, or rather what ridiculous set of rules they have in SA. How can someone be stripped of one's citizenship after some years of absence. Usually that is done when someone is a resident and leaves for years, but not if one is a citizen.

I had a little go-around in Germany because I wanted to renew my german passport and the local authorities didn't want to take my application because I also have a second passport. (Here, the rule is that you need special permission to continue to keep your german citizenship if you also have a second citizenship). My "permission papers" are in the US. Problem was solved by a phonecall to the federal level agency who issued the permission.

The lady there informed me that she's had many inquiries by people like myself only because the local authorities across the country are too lazy and/or too ignorant to use the IT network and look up the permission statuses. So she wrote a scathing e-mail to the local authority (cc to me) and voila, suddenly they were able to take my application and issue the passport.

I need not tell you that my opinion of local government is not particularly high.

Still, I am glad you were able to sort out the dilemma. It really is quite amazing that nobody in SA has caught on to the fact that their rules leave people in dilemmas such as yours and bothered to change the rules.
