......I moved to Cyprus. Having been on a high with anticipation and the excitement of the move, I found myself in a taxi on the way to my new home thinking 'What have I done?' I was moving to a foreign country on my own and didn't know a soul.

Luckily, waking up to sunshine and blue skies the next day revived my spirits and I have been very lucky whilst living here. Lots of laughter, a few tears on the way but would not have changed a thing. Now have some of my family living here too, including a new grandson, our 'Made in Cyprus' unexpected addition. laugh

Many things are different here, some I don't agree with, but I choose to live here as the weather and lifestyle is better for me. I am a foreigner here after all and it is not my place to criticise local customs etc. In general I have found the Cypriots very friendly and neighbourly. I purposely settled in a Cypriot village rather than an ex-pat community where I think there are a lot of people trying to make a little Britain in the sun.

And those who "trying to make a little Britain in the sun",are the one's groaning and moaning most of the time, not realising we are southerners, having our ways of thinking, culturally and otherwise, and cannot be northerners overnight with the striking wand of a witchangel2

I don't want to be "northern".

I have learnd in my life that wherever I come and I shaw respect to the local people and their customs I'll be wellcome.

I have 2 couples here from GB. One guy told me how strange is that here are all houses different and he can't find two houses that look the same. He asked me why are we doing them in that way 'cause it is much simplier to built them if moust of the houses are the same.

I find people like you and Maisie and the others who posted so positive here - fantastic!thumbs up

8 years ago I came to live in Switzerland, in a small "cowtown" - and it was SO interesting to see how different everything is, and how they do things, their culture, all the little village festivals, and customs and traditions.

And on another forum here, I find the ex-pats mostly seem to have such a negative attitude ..... always complaining about the Swiss and their way of life. And insisting on trying to do things their own way, and then wondering why they are ignored by the locals?grin

For some reason the ex-pats, having left their homeland, usually because they want a better quality of life, then proceed to turn their new home into a replica of what they left behind. The English seem to have a love of committees and want to organise everyone and change what has worked fine for years without their help.

I prefer my Cypriot neighbours who always have time to stop and say hello and I often find bags of fruit from their gardens left on my doorstep as a gift. Life moves at a slower pace here and I love it.cheering

A question that I like make to myself is:

What I have given back to this land and its people?

For you -if I may say- is that your positive attitude is a great asset not only for you but for the people around, wherever you are.

Congratulations for your great time in Cyprus!

Moving are people usually at a later age.
It is understandable that people who have spent a lifetime in one cultural environment will bring with them their habits and that they will have some difficulties to get used to the new environment. But it is always their problem and while holding him in their house everything is OK

The problem for them and entire environment is created when they start to act preponderantly, when they insist that the environment must adapts to them. This is disrespect and bad manner and then their environment rejects them.

An old proverb says: "When you are in Rome, be Romans"

Good on yer, Maisie !
I went to Paphos one time..full of Brits , lol
elsewhere like Polis ( then ! ) was totally ' local and lovely '.
We have the same ' syndrome ' here in Spain
clearly it's still number 1 choice for expat Brits
but only 25 minutes inland from me
there is a town ( area ) which the Spanish call.....
'' Little England '' doh
Even the locals laugh and call it ' Romford ' .....grrrhh
Fish, chips , mushy peas...British shop ( prices x 3 !! )
When they heard a Chinese shop was opening , everyone thought
it was going to be a Restuarant / take away !
Turned out it was a ' cheapo bazaar ' rolling on the floor laughing

I just don't understand why anyway, wouldn't try to assimilate
into the local culture as fully as possible ?
Besides the locals here are far more friendly , than neighbours
back in the UK...they would help anyone with anything !
It's like France....or most Countries
( the French supposedly hate the Brits ? )
but try to speak their language....even with a little phrase book
and they will appreciate your effort to respect their culture !

So yes, agreed ..committees / clubs / outings / shops / pubs
all to serve the expats....makes me mad very mad
Should have gone to Egg and chipland, (Benidorm or Torremolinos)
and interstingly enough, they are so flipping insular
they border on rude to English who aren't part of their cliques !

Give me the Spanish ( or locals wherever ) anyday
and life is so much grander for it thumbs up wine

Andy handshake
