Is it socially acceptable for a woman to ask a man to marry her? Or is it still very traditional and only a man asks? Saying it "depends on the person" does not help, I am looking for a discussion of a level of social acceptance as a population. I'd like to expand this to compare this in the other Germanic-speaking areas (e.g. Austria, Switzerland) without losing control of the topic and it including all of Europe.

Also, is Marriage fading or increasing in popularity? Are courtships typically long, or is it acceptable to get married after being able to tell quickly? Do Germans marry at younger or older ages these days? Tell your stories!

Everybody elope :-)

In my opinion the most difficult thing is to go against the tradition so it will not be socially acceptable for a woman to ask a man to marry her.Yes the things can very case to case but society will resist against this.Because of so many reasons marriage is fading away. Most of the German start thinking about marriage after the age of forty and they marry after fifty.

Hey there:

I got married to an Austrian man, whom I met through this site.

He formally ''proposed'' two weeks before getting married, just for fun, becauase everything was already arranged.

Getting married was a mutual decision and not a sudden surprise.

So, perhaps wasn't the most romantical proposal or whatever , but my , now husband, always very practical ,thought about every single detail before taking this step.

And wasnt a long courtship... after three months living together we got married ... and very happy we did it .

LG.

Hello.
In Germany I have to say that it really depends.the southern regions are definetly more tradotional, especially country sides.
In Berlin Hamburg or similar liberal cities I won't see any trouble.
Me for myself I would not have trouble with being asked by a man.tradition is nice, but we are all moving forward aren't we.

I'm sure I heard that marriages a more often now because of unstable economical situations.thats why people loom to stabilise other areas of there lives.which is the marriage then.thats of course the wrong reason so many don't last very long.his is through all ages.
Then also education has an influence.a woman with academical grades wants a career and maybe not marry or get kids under 35.while the lower level people won't have issues building family's much earlier.

Just my 2 cents.

Here in Poland people are traditional. They prefer when a man asks a woman to marry. And this is true - marriage is fading. More and more people are single espacially in big towns. In the countryside you can find different situation. What it is in the whole Europe? It is interesting.

Yes, since you women are ahead us men!
Let's say the truth! Women select men and not vice versa, they decide whether to go out with a men or to start a relationship, so yes it is socially acceptable for a woman to ask a man to marry her!

Here in Bulgaria it's absolutely unacceptable a thing to happen. Neither any man, nor any woman will accept that.
