no1brightongirl: i would say the cheapest is one of the eastern europe countries and the dearest the uk of course
I am not sure of the cheapest as the Eastern countries are very up and coming and becoming popular, more people will move there and that will puch up the prices...
"The UK is the third most expensive country in the world in which to live, it was claimed today.
The country's reputation as "rip-off Britain" seems assured, after research by banking giant HSBC showed only Norway and France had higher living costs.
The survey, which uses data from the Economist Intelligence Unit, ranks countries according to the relative cost of sustaining a typical British lifestyle and illustrates how long a Briton's typical annual expenditure would last overseas.
HSBC said that if, for example, a couple ate out twice a month in the UK the study assumed they would continue to do so if they moved abroad.
With the lifestyle remaining the same, the study showed how much longer or shorter their budget would last.
The results show a year's annual expenditure in the UK would sustain the same lifestyle for almost two years in South Africa, and four years in Iran.
In Norway it would last 11 months and one week, while in France it would have gone after 11 months and two weeks.
Britons moving to the most popular overseas destinations of Australia and Spain would also be able to maintain their current lifestyle on a lower budget, the survey showed.
One year's annual expenditure in the UK would last 14 months and one week in Australia and 15 months and three weeks in Spain.
Enrique Roche, head of HSBC Premier, said: "Britons who live abroad, especially those who do so for only a few months each year, are often not willing to compromise on their standard of living.
"This research gives great insight into those countries that will allow your cash to stretch the furthest, and in turn those countries that may shrink it."
According to figures from the Foreign Office, 500,000 Britons live abroad for part of the year, while 5.5 million British nationals are based overseas permanently."
There is a ton of information on this sort of thing online....and of course makes fascinating reading...South America...Panama...Thailand, eastern Europe...but things are changing...
..of course, one has to remember..cost of living is always related to services and infrastructure...usually, you get what you pay for....you can certainly go live in a cheap country, but you will also not get the services and infrastructure of a first-world country...you can't have your cake and eat it too...
hello lago,my dear, well i have to admit the cost of living is lower in malta that uk.some friends of my parents go to gozo, for the winter and rent a house for 50e per week and that has 3 beds,in london, you are looking at £300 per week and that is in a not very nice part of the capital, anything better, would be more like £400 a week

Romania is not cheap to live. Especially Bucharest where properties are at some higher values than in other countries. I know because I just bought a house last December. Clothes are ridiculously expensive here. I bought cheaper same brands/models cosmetics and clothes from Austria and France. But of course we can not generalize. There are also cheap and interesting things here as well. Mike and Gussi know what I mean.

I almost bought a brocolli in Gozo yesterday - two euros, so I decided 'no'
I love my country very much and I am not ashamed that I am a Romanian even if some people confuse us with gipsies. Gipsies are gipsies and they are all over the world. We have here about 4 milions of gipsies (many left to steal in your countries, sorry ) out of 23 milion people total population.
