The Holodeck is a simulated reality facility located on starships and starbases in the fictional Star Trek universe. The holodeck is depicted as an enclosed room in which objects and people are simulated by a combination of replicated matter, tractor beams, and shaped force fields onto which holographic images are projected. Sounds and smells are simulated by speakers and fragranced fluid atomizer...

Good post, heartfelt story, thanks for sharing catlynn04!!!RE: The Secret
i read the secret a couple of times.its very hard to stay positive all the time.yes i found similar ways of thinking just put different in some other books i read .Climbing a Mountain Overcome and Adapt
This last Tuesday, after a 12 mile bike ride, I climbed Sleepy Giant Mountain in Cheshire Connecticut. I went with a young couple here on vacation from South America.I have climbed this mountain before and the hardest climb is the blue trail, the steepest and most challenging. This climb always reminds me of life in general. It reminds me of how sometimes in life, things can be a big climb(obstacle) and it seems like you will never get to the top(over it). The upward climb is hard and tiring, but once your over the top and start climbing down, it becomes easier, you feel happy that you have succeeded and that you overcame the obstacles on the way up.
I felt good about keeping up with a couple in their late 20s to early 30s. My friend was complaining during most of the climb up, it's too steep, I am afraid of falling, what do I do, when will it end. He was in a battle against his own mind. Isn't that what we do when we feel that life's obstacles seem overwhelming? His girlfriend is a physical education professor and she followed me right up the mountain without hesitation and soon realized it was a mental exercise. The climb seemed at times to never end, it took us 3 hours to complete the entire trail and a good hour and one half was the steep part of the mountain itself.
I suggest you try something like finding a mountain to climb. Break it down into steps, climb right up, over come what you see, pace your self, overcome and adapt. Once at the top, you'll be able to see for miles and appreciate the beauty of our planet and also challenge yourself with the lesson, in mind over negative circumstances or situations that appear to look like mountains or large obstacles.
Are there other exercises or outdoor activities you think may teach the same lesson? What do you think?
RE: The Past
Yes, I definitely think that looking at past mistakes we've made in different situations can make a big difference in how we deal with the situation, if we come across it again, later in life. And I think that changing your behavior in a positive way can change things for the better, too. I can think of a few situations where I tried this technique and it was really starting to make a difference in how I felt about it (I say 'starting to' because the preson who was in volved with the situation passed away some months later after I started taking stock of how to best deal with the situation (for myself). But I think had the person lived, this technique would have continued to work well for me.In a nutshell, it was the living situation between my cousin and aunt who lived here in town (my aunt has since passed away, but my cousin is still in town). My cousin, who is near my age, had been an angry person growing up (for reasons I won't get into) so she became an angry adult later in life. She lived with my aunt (her mother) and would often take her anger or frustrations about anything-out on my aunt. My mother and I visited them often so we would see this. Oddly, my aunt would often take her anger/abuse. My cousin would do this even in front of company (like family or friends). This would really irritate and upset me. One day I decided I was tired of hearing and seeing their behavior. I decided the next time my cousin was disrespectful (which was often) towards my aunt, I would apologize and simply walk out of their house or walk away from whereever they/we were.
My new behavior and whatever effects it may have had for me (and them) didn't last long because my aunt passed away not long after, but it did make me feel better and I decided it was probably a good solution for any situation that makes me as uncomfortable as they often did when they fought. In fact, I'm not sure why their friends and my other family members didn't do the same thing. Maybe if they had showed how unpleasant they found my cousin's behavior to be, it was have spurred my aunt to put an end to the awful treatment she was dealt.

*smiles* Ruben and good morning :) (I was trying to drag the 'angel' icon to this box, but it wouldn't let me :( lol.)Lucky or Unlucky?
Good post Lynn!! Yes gratitude is a very powerful thing. Very good point. Instead of crying and complaining, think in reverse, be grateful for the things you have, just like you wrote!!Welcome
Lynn, welcome to the group. This is a good place to introduce yourself. I hope within this group you can find ways to help you achieve your goals within CS.Good luck and God bless!!

Hello,Hope everyone is well. Not sure if this is the right place to introduce myself, but my name is Lynn and am a member of this site. I was really thinking about leaving CS for various reasons, but this particular discussion forum looks interesting so I might stay here a little while longer.
Have a good night all, and look forward to future discussions.

RE: Lucky or Unlucky?
VEry interesting post, Ruben.Close on the heels of the concept of 'luck' is the idea of being grateful for what you have. I'm willing to bet that 'unlucky' people often tend to forget what they have to be grateful for. Sometimes I'm guilty of that, myself, especially after having a pretty hectic year emotionally, last year.
But I'm happy to say that often, especially when I'm in my car, I remember things I still have that I'm grateful for- and there's quite a bit I have to be thankful for. Such as my car. I'm grateful I have a way to get around town; I'm grateful for the family I have even if some are far away; I'm grateful I have enough money to pay my bills and for food; grateful for my 2 cats; am grateful for my health and that I have all four of my limbs (whereas some don't and need wheelchairs); grateful for my friends.. and my list goes on. I may not have all I had last year, but I do still have a lot. Sometimes it's good to remind yourself of these things if /when things aren't (always) going your way. Even if your list gets down to things you might not think of much, like having both arms and legs, having roof over your head, etc (assuming you do), having a dryer that works.. You might find you have a lot more going for yourself than you thought! :)

Lucky or Unlucky?
Very good point!! Make sure you know what you want!!The Past
Yes, exactly! So I think we do have to look at our past to learn from it, so we can also let it go, and not let it define us. So like you wrote, we can change our patterns and change our future. And thanks for sharing your past with us. That was a touching story and I am so glad that you were able to change and things are now looking up and you are where you want to be. Amen!!
RE: The Past
For years I worked only to pay the bills, feed the kids...etc, but I was never happy. It got so bad that I looked for an escape route and turned to casino gambling. I spent so much time gambling that I was evicted from my apartment and lost my job.I'd look for and find another job, place and whatever, and within another year I found myself back out on the street. This pattern repeated itself for a number of years. (about ten).
Finally, I said ENOUGH!
I took a first step to control my gambling problem by having myself banned from the casino indefinitely. I worked at my job only to save my money. When I had enough money saved, I bought a ticket to the west coast. When i got here, instead of falling back into the habit of looking for a menial job, I decided to go back to school and study acting for film and television, something that i always wanted to do, but never did because of domestic responsibilities and other commitments. Now I am in school and following my dream. I have never been happier and everything seems to be falling into place.
RE: The Past
Only when we change something in our pattern will we be able to change our circumstances. You keep doing the same ole, same ole, you're going to get the same ole, same ole.RE: Lucky or Unlucky?
.....And always remember, be careful what you wish for, you just might get it.Lucky or Unlucky?
Food for thought!I read about a study they did with people that thought they were lucky and those that did not. Both groups were studied. Sure enough the lucky group always had things go their way, while the unlucky group did not. After very close examination of both groups they found some profound differences. The only difference was the way they thought about themselves.
For example: if a person from both groups lost their jobs, the lucky person was upbeat and just thought I will get another job, I always do, and proceeded to go on interviews and eventually found a job. The unlucky person thought, I am unlucky, I will not find a job and was so down that they did not put much effort into finding a job and had a harder time finding one.
In the end the only real difference between the lucky and unlucky people was the way they thought. We are all programed to think others are luckier, or we can't have this or we can do this or that. Think in reverse and things will change.
As Luck Would Have It
RE: Hey hang on, what's this "fictional" stuff?
Every time I look at that pic of yours, it reminds me of the actor Bruce Willis. The Past
I think in order to understand how we create our situations and circumstances, we need to take time to remember the past. I don't mean dwell on the past, I mean think about what we thought and did that brought us to the present, in order to understand the mechanisms of thought and action. What is a good way to do this? One possible way is to get yourself in a meditative frame of mind, find a quite place to set or lie down where you will not be disturbed. Once you have settled yourself down and relaxed, try to work backwards in time taking a few circumstances that had happened that you may have preferred not to have experienced. Take one situation and try going back to the time before it happened. Try and examine what you where thinking, doing, examine what your attitude was at that time.
Using my "In the Workplace" experience from the other forum post I will go back in time and look at my thought patterns, actions, and overall attitude during those stressful times.
My thoughts at the time? I hated my job, my boss, and my coworkers.
Getting myself to go to work was like robotic moves and an endless cycle of repetition going through the motions. It also seemed like I bumped heads with my coworkers and my boss constantly. Eventually, I was like a zambe, walking around going through the motions and daily routine with my mind, as they say, "out to lunch."
I did this for years and all it got me was more of the same. It wasn't until I changed my thinking that things began to change and they changed drastically.
Now I am in another mess that I created going back 7 years. I am doing the very same thing and I believe with allot of effort, I will come out and get another chance to do it right.
"Those who forget the past, are condemned to repeat it." George Santayana
What are your thoughts on this possible technique?
Do you think this can work and help you understand the thoughts and actions that create your circumstances and situations around you? If not, what would you do differently?
Hey hang on, what's this "fictional" stuff?
Set phasers to disintergrate ... with no ashes ... FIRE!A New Earth
BClady, very interesting comment with lot's of information. There was a very interesting Youtube video that touched on what you just wrote, I wish I could remember it, perhaps later It will come to me.
RE: A New Earth
I have my own thoughts on egoism and they fall within the realm of what you said.
The book of revelations states in 13:18; "Let him who has insight calculate the number of the beast, for it is "MAN'S" number. His number is 666.
In this context, 'MAN'S' means not one man, but mankind in general. "The beast" is not just one man rising to power. It is a collective consciousness held by all of mankind.
There is the 'Christ'...The highest level of conscious awareness or enlightenment achieved, in other words, the God conscience.
.. and there is the "ANTI" christ...that which leaves no room for enlightenment.
The ego is the house of the seven deadly sins but it was constructed by fear. Fear is the deadliest of sins. All of man's pride, greed, selfishness, vanity, gluttonous behavior which motivates his atrocious acts of evil derive from the ego. It is the goal of the Buddhists to eliminate ego. When you eliminate ego, you eliminate 'the beast'.
The answer to the above quoted revelation verse is found within the number of the verse itself...18. Apply the word 'ego' to numerology.
E=5 G=7 O=6
5 + 7 + 6 = 18
18 = 6 + 6 + 6.
18 is divided into 666 37 times equally.
RE: Think and Grow Rich
ITS a good book, I think you shouldRE: Hey hang on, what's this "fictional" stuff?
We shouldn't judge it before we've seen it all! I think that all 'fiction' contains an element of truth, as do myth and legend. Those ideas came from somewhere tangible.
It is said that; "if it can be imagined then it is possible."
I believe that the characters created in science fiction, including the mutations of the human species, are all memories within the fiction writer's subconcious brought to the surface. Who is to say that he/she did not live a past existence on such a planet or planets, within our universe that inhabit these forms of life? We only call it fiction because we haven't seen it exist within this/our reality.
Some more food for thought. We know that dinosaurs were not ficticious because we have discovered evidence of their existence, yet we continue to say that Atlantis and Lumuria are 'myths'. According to Plato's "Republic", Atlantis existed during the last age of aquarius over 26,000 years ago. The dinosaurs existed 65 million years ago and we have only recently, within the past few centuries, discovered their remains. Give it another 60 million years, maybe the lost continent of Atlantis will be discovered. By that time we humans may have already fallen into extinction and our race and stories will be considered a 'myth' to those who inherit the earth after us.
Hey hang on, what's this "fictional" stuff?
Part of the discription of this group says -"The Holodeck is a simulated reality facility located on starships and starbases in the fictional Star Trek universe. "
What's FICTIONAL about the Star Trek Universe?
Just who do you think is protecting you from rampaging Klingons and enslaving Ferengi?
A little APPRECIATION wouldn't go astray you know.
