RE: Monsanto seed banned in Germany

I'm sure Germany has brought Monsanto now they are flying under the name Bayer now..

The Monsanto seeds produce the crop but the seeds from the crop don't sprout up at all, Heritage seeds are an old seed strain that many people here in NZ recommend for on going crops..

RE: What kind of soil do you have?

My soil is black top soil for about the first 10 inches then it turns to a thin greyish pipe clay layer, then into orange clay..
It's always great growing in the first season then soil conditioners are needed for following seasons..

RE: Any Flower gardners out there?

I'm starting to grow companion flowers amongst my vege garden, plants and flowers that knock back the unwanted insects but also encourage bees..

RE: mice or rodent problems

Yes, your rats are migrating from the river for the food in your garden ...in the winter they will migrate to your place for shelter when they get flooded out ...you have to kill them uh oh

RE: mice or rodent problems

Does this work for Rats as well ? I have a cottage type garden and live in a cottage, I was horrified to see yet another large reet very near to my bedroom window yesterday, I have laid poison and feel bad about this but they're so dangerous and I'm wondering what is attracting them this time of year [end of June].
I have grass between my Beds and am wondering would paving stones or just stones over Screed be better at deterring them ? I live somewhat near a river [across the road] and I think this is where theyre coming from. Thanks

Hello Everyone

Nobody seems to chat much on here. Obviously all busy working in the garden. Over here the last of the roses are blooming and my magnolia grandiflora smells delightul. Time to start all the pruning one of my apple trees always does well but the other one coxs orange the birds devoured all the fruit. I am about to harvest my artichokes and would like some cooking tips an acquired taste I have decided. Tried roasting them and boiling them surely theyre must be other ways to prepare them.

Hi all - I am a Master Gardener

In 2007, I took a Master Gardening course through my county for free, meeting 3 days a week for 3 months. I had to buy my books.
The next year we had to give back 75 volunteer hours, plus 8 extra hours of eduction: I graduated, yeah!

I volunteered 25 hours in our demo garden (We harvest our organic veggies, then transport them to a food band, 20,000 pounds last year.)

Then 25 hours at the help desk: answering calls, emails about gardening, and trying to figure out diseases, pests that the public had with trees, flowers, etc.

Another 25 hours working special events - manning flower and garden events.
This was my favorite, working with the public planting things, or with the kids, showing them how to put a seed in a small container to make a Sunflower.

Last, 8 hours of continuing education.

I got a award for working over 250 hours, and a pin from the White House. This year we have a Children's Team formed, I am on it.

I love gardening inside and out.

RE: Harvest time

Thanks for the invite GreenTassels, glad to join this group, but right about now I'm putting the garden to bed for the winter months. The last 6 pounds of tomato's I harvested became about 5 liters of tomato wine. wine I think I'll have a couple of sips while looking around the group. Thanks, Abram

RE: poppies

Oh of course, I 'forgot' about Chile being south of the equator.. so gardening is only just beginning for you..

So what are the first flowers of Spring where you are? Are you high above sea level?

Here in Switzerland we always have Snow Drops as the first sign of Spring..

poppies

Sowed poppies two weeks ago. Spring is slow, we still have some snow. They have just started to appear, green pinpoints, I hope the snow won`t last so that they can grow.

RE: What do you use for potato bugs or june bugs

I read somewhere that spraying with lemon juice works for some bugs. Some dont' like the taste of it. But I would be carefull with that...you might just end up attracting a different sort of bug that likes the citrus of the lemon.

The only other thing i can say is know your bug. Maybe find out what likes to eat potatoe bugs and then find a way to get a natural predator to your garden. Then maybe you will lose some of your harvest and not all.

Any Flower gardners out there?

Do you know what flowers you have in there? Alot of it depends on the flower.

To keep the slugs off egg shells work wonders. Every time you bake your cakes save your egg shells in a cup or bowl or something. Smash them up and then sprinkle the bits all around your flowers. They cut into the underbellies of the slugs so they have to find somewhere else to go and eat. I've heard that aluminum foil will do the same thing but I think the silver showing takes away from the flowers. The white of the egg shell just looks like perlite that you add into the soil..not taking away from the flowers.

Harvest time

what have you been able to harvest so far?

I am drying herbs and eating the last of the tomatos, I have taken down a few baskets of apples and the blackberries are almost done too..

Since I didnt grow any veggies this year, I have to get back to buying them now,.. siff sniff..blues

RE: mice or rodent problems

Have you tried this?

I guess it depends on the rodents.

But most live under ground, and Mint doesnt have its roots very deep,- so I wonder how this is works..

RE: Any Flower gardners out there?

do you regularly fertilise your flowers?

I have found that my flower beds look dismal (the slugs didnt help..) if I dont fertilise regularly..-

(so different from a veggie patch where I add stuff before planting and then just mulch and weed..)
Neenaw

RE: Any Flower gardners out there?

why dont you start with herbs, very easy to grow and easy to use, and progress then onto the veggies, at least you can use herbs in cooking for time being

mice or rodent problems

Should you have problems with rodents in fields or gardens or houses, use peppermint.
Plant it in the borders around the house, or put fresh peppermint in the house where you think the mice may be getting in...

it works

hi shirley...next year, I'm not going to use plastic. small areas of it seem to be fine, but large areas of plastic create too much heat below. my tomatoes did okay but my peppers (168 plants) were cooked. a smaller area of plastic with peppers (18 plants) that I planted, are loaded with fruit. also, I was plagued with a cutworm or cutworms in my tomatoes. I lost around eight plants to this pest. they get into the plant at the base and eat away, killing the plant and then they move on to another. the plastic cover may be enabling this pest to easily range about. I plucked around eight bac worms (bacworms, tobacco worms, tomato worms, they have many names) from my tomatoes this year. they are the bright green caterpillar worms that climb to the top of the plant to gorge themselves on the most tender areas and then move on to the next. it's amazing how much they can eat and how quickly. usually I only come across one or two each season. they aggrivated me so much this year that I subjected the ones that I found to trial by highway. I placed them on the center line of the two lane highway by my home, then wished them good luck. one managed to cheat death. also, unfenced areas of tomatoes (33 plants) were routinely munched on by deer. I won't do that next year. seems only squash is immune to the tastebuds of these creatures. plus, it seems that deer don't like the irritation of the squash leaves against their bodies.
