Should anyone desire to keep cost down when making a portfolio, or giving out samples of your work, I recommend using an inexpensive home printer and a continuous ink system or refillable cartridges.
Today's printers do incredible jobs of reproducing stunning photos, however the cost of the replacement ink cartridges is outrageous.
On one site, someone calculated how much it would cost to fill an Olympic sized swimming pool with ink from manufactures cartridges purchased at retail prices.
In other words, take an $18 cartridge, drill a hole in it and dump the ink into the pool. Cost- $18- SO FAR. You will need a lot of cartridges to fill the pool, right?
So any guesses as to how much it would cost?

And you are still not even close....

They say it takes 2L (almost 2 quarts) of oil to make one ink cartridge. That's not the actual make up of the cartridges, but the oil to mine the raw materials, ship the materials, run the machines to make the cartridges, fuel to get the cartridge to the store, where you drove to buy it and take it home.
Two litres!!!

I bought some Kodak Photo Matte Inkjet paper recently for a steel at $2 for a box of 100 sheets.
That's .02¢ per sheet.
Add another .08¢ for ink, and I have a photo quality full colour 8x10 for only TEN CENTS!!!
Costco sells premium glossy photo paper for @.15¢ per sheet, and add the .08¢ for ink, and you have an 8.5 x 11 borderless stunning photo print for under a quarter!

As I mentioned, refillable cartridges are also an excellent option, especially if you have a printer/scanner and don't care to gouge holes in the side to accommodate the feed lines or make your printer portable for use on site or at the cottage.
I can also link you to how to turn a colour printer into a black and white printer by using shades of black- Black/Light Black, Grey/ Light Grey. Using this mix will produce B&W photos that rival anything coming out of a photo processing plant!
Imagine giving your work to family and friends without going too deep out of pocket!
Imagine taking photos of bands (like I do) and giving some of the performers a stunning photo print of themselves the next time you see them as your way of thanking them for the excellent entertainment! Imagine them wanting to hire you to do future shoots because they see first hand in print the quality of your work- LOL
Just imagine how impressive your portfolio would be with dozens of prints, instead of just a few!
Archival ink is also available by different companies for slightly more money for most printers, and now you can sell your work, and make huge profits as your cost is still peanuts!
How about making your own Photo Business Cards for less than .03¢ per card!
It goes on and on, folks.
Most of my printers take six cartridges. For example- My Epson R280 cost just over $100 for a new set of cartridges.
I buy bulk ink in 4oz (118ml) bottles for a set of 6- $30 tax included.
There is 10 cartridges worth of ink in each bottle.
So, my choice is to pay over $1175.00 (tax in) for ten sets of cartridges, or pay $30.
Rocket science, eh?

Great info. I dont know what part of the world you are in but in my town , there is a place where u can buy printer paper for one buck, that is for small 4 by 9 or whatever. I have a hp photoprinter. I love it. I also have Picture it program I love and also by mistake downloaded cvs photo editior when I forgot my digital camera on the way to my daughters graduation and bought a disposable camera. Now I have 2 conflicting photo editors. Im afraid if I delete cvs, I will lose my pics of course, I have tried to transfer the cvs pics to my picture it program but dont have the smarts to do it. anyway . Take care. Jackie
